Exploring the Galmaemot Martyrdom Site in Boryeong, South Korea

Hello.
Today, I would like to introduce a special place nestled along the blue west coast of South Chungcheong Province,
the Galmaemot Martyrdom Site.
While traveling, we are often drawn to beautiful landscapes,
but there are also places where our hearts linger due to the stories and historical traces that have endured over time.
Galmaemot Martyrdom Site is one of those places.
As I entered the site, the first thing I felt was a profound calmness.
A gentle sea breeze blew in, and the expansive view under the blue sky felt infinitely peaceful.
However, this place is not just a location with beautiful scenery.
About 160 years ago, it became a historical site where many sacrificed their lives to uphold their faith.
In particular, Galmaemot Martyrdom Site is a prominent Catholic site in South Chungcheong Province,
holding the painful history of the Byeongin Persecution, and it continues to attract many pilgrims and visitors today.
This space, where the peaceful scenery of the West Sea and the history of martyrdom coexist,
invites us to remember the enduring stories of faith that will not be forgotten over time.
As I stepped through the entrance, I was greeted by neatly trimmed pine trees and a spacious lawn.
The unique tranquil atmosphere of the site made me walk slowly and thoughtfully.
It may look like an ordinary park, but this is the historical site where many believers were martyred during the Byeongin Persecution in 1866.
Galmaemot Martyrdom Site is located in Ocheon-myeon, Boryeong City, South Chungcheong Province.
Ocheon, which was strategically important during the Joseon Dynasty, is recorded as the place where the martyrdom occurred during the Byeongin Persecution.
The surrounding areas, including Boryeong, Dangjin, Hongseong, Yesan, and Seosan, are known for the active spread of Catholicism during the late Joseon period.
Upon entering the site, I encountered a spacious area along with a guide map.
The map indicates various spaces such as the Statue of Our Lady of Victory, the Memorial Hall, the Martyrdom Site, and the Sacramental Shop.
Since the site is larger than expected, I recommend checking the guide map before moving around.
The first place I visited was the martyrdom site of five saints.
This location commemorates the five saints who were martyred during the Byeongin Persecution.
The protagonists are Bishop Daveluy Antonio, Father Ometre Pedro, Father Wiang Luca, President Jang Ju-gi Joseph, and President Hwang Seok-du Luca.
They were transported from Hanyang to Ocheon on March 29, 1866.
After spending a night at the military office, they were brought to the sandy beach of Galmaemot on March 30, Good Friday, where they were executed.
Now, it appears as a tranquil site, but it was a place where a tragic history unfolded in front of many soldiers and residents at that time.
Standing before the martyrdom monument, I noticed the inscription that read:
"The chosen execution site was the sandy beach."
This short sentence carries a weighty significance.
While the gentle breeze now flows through a peaceful landscape,
this was the very spot where people had to end their lives for their faith about 160 years ago.
Nearby, the Statue of Our Lady of Victory stands.
According to the guide, this statue is related to the statue of Our Lady of Victory housed in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory in Paris, France.
Bishop Daveluy was also known for his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary.
Thus, the statue feels more like a symbol that comforts and remembers the martyrs rather than just a decorative piece.
Around the statue, beautifully landscaped gardens and flowers were in harmony.
It felt like a space that remembers the history of martyrdom while also conveying peace and hope.
The coexistence of historical pain and comfort left a strong impression on me.
After exploring the area around the memorial hall,
I found that the hall introduces the history of the Galmaemot Martyrdom Site and the lives of the martyrs.
Although the building's exterior is not extravagant, it possesses a substantial presence that blends naturally with the atmosphere of the site.
In another area, the names of martyrs such as Park Pedro, Son Chi-yang John, Lee Young-joong, Lee Valdromeo, and Im Un-pil were engraved.
Galmaemot Martyrdom Site remembers not only the five saints but also many other martyrs.
While some martyrs have their names recorded, many others do not.
Especially at the monument honoring unnamed martyrs, I found myself lingering.
The inscription notes that the area is the site where five martyrs, in addition to the five saints, and around 500 unnamed believers were martyred.
History includes those who have left their names and those who have not.
However, their sacrifices and courage are not forgotten.
This aspect is what made Galmaemot Martyrdom Site feel particularly special.
It is impressive that the site remembers both saints and unnamed martyrs together.
Some have been recorded in history books, while others have faded away without names,
but here, they are all honored with the same heart.
Walking behind the site, a vast expanse of the West Sea unfolded before me.
The blue sea and gentle waves were as beautiful as a painting.
However, this sea holds more meaning than just a picturesque view.
It is a space where the last traces and stories of the martyrs are conveyed.
Thus, the time spent gazing at the sea felt even more special.
After briefly exploring the sacramental shop,
I realized it is not just a simple memorial space but a place that helps keep the meaning of Galmaemot alive.
As I walked slowly, gazing at the tranquil site and beautiful sea,
Galmaemot Martyrdom Site was not merely a tourist destination.
It is a special place where one can encounter beautiful nature while remembering history and reflecting on the meaning of faith.
This visit was more than just a journey to find beautiful scenery;
it was a time to reflect on the lives and beliefs of the martyrs in our history as I walked along the calm West Sea.
Galmaemot Martyrdom Site is a special place that holds both painful history and deep meaning within its peaceful natural landscape.
As a site that remembers the place of martyrdom, it quietly conveys the values of faith, courage, and hope to us living today.
If you are planning a trip to Boryeong, I hope you will not only enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery but also discover the traces and meaningful stories of Catholic history in the Chungcheong region at Galmaemot Martyrdom Site.
I hope this place continues to be a space for many to remember history and a resting place where one can pause and reflect on oneself.
