Exploring the Enchantment of Sobaeksan in April

Sobaeksan, often referred to as the 'Little Baekdu Mountain,' exudes a mystical charm in April, where the end of winter meets the beginning of spring. Its majestic mountain range unfolds beautifully, with vast plains leading to Birobong that evoke the exotic scenery of the Swiss Alps.
Like most national parks, Sobaeksan has no entrance fee, making it accessible for all visitors. However, a small parking fee may apply, so it's advisable to check in advance. April is the time when delicate pink wildflowers begin to bloom around the hiking trails, offering a serene experience before the peak azalea season.
The main peak, Birobong (1,439m), features an expansive grassland devoid of large trees. Walking along the long wooden deck path gives the sensation of walking above the clouds, and the clear air in April provides breathtaking views of distant mountains like Worak and Jirisan.
Despite being in April, it's essential to bring a light windbreaker or outerwear as the area is known for strong winds year-round. The trails are well-maintained with gentle slopes, making them suitable for families and couples who can enjoy a leisurely hike together.
In late May, the azaleas take center stage, but in April, rare spring wildflowers such as virgin's bower, wood sorrel, and bellflower are the stars. Walking along the Cheondong Valley or Eui's Valley trails, you can spot shy little flowers blooming at your feet, a precious sight unique to this time of year.
Wildflowers are sensitive to temperature changes and typically bloom first on the sunny southern slopes. It is strictly prohibited to stray off the designated paths for photography, so it's recommended to capture the delicate beauty of nature within the established trails.
If you're ascending Sobaeksan from the direction of Yeongju, you cannot miss the 28-meter-high Hibang Falls, the tallest waterfall in the Yeongnam region. The sound of the refreshing water complements the greenery in April. Just above the waterfall lies Hibangsa, a historic temple from the Silla period, allowing visitors to soak in both natural beauty and history.
The Hibangsa trail is somewhat steeper than other routes but is well-maintained for easy access to the waterfall. Taking a moment to rest while inhaling the negative ions and fresh air from the falls can wash away the fatigue of daily life.
If an intense hike feels daunting, walking along the historic Juknyeong Old Road, which connects Yeongju and Danyang, is a wonderful alternative. This path, once traversed by scholars heading to examinations, is now a pleasant walking trail perfect for families.
In April, the Juknyeong Old Road features a beautiful green tunnel formed by dense forests, with resting spots along the way to enjoy a leisurely break. For an efficient experience, park at the Juknyeong rest area and enjoy light trekking towards Yeonhwabong or stroll along the old road to fully appreciate the springtime beauty of Sobaeksan.
This April, escape the crowds and embrace the peaceful comfort that Sobaeksan offers. The majestic ridges, shy wildflowers, and refreshing waterfalls create a perfect retreat for you in the spring of 2026.
