In the past, terms like national treasures and cultural assets were commonly used. However, starting in 2024, these will be encompassed under the concept of 'national heritage', which includes national, ethnic, and global heritage.

This shift moves away from a commodity-centered perspective to a classification system based on three pillars: cultural heritage, natural heritage, and intangible heritage.

With growing interest in our national heritage, travel routes exploring these sites are becoming increasingly popular.

Recently, I visited the cultural heritage sites of Mudeoksa Temple and the Memorial Hall of Choi Ik-hyun in Cheongyang, known as the 'Alps of Chungnam'.

The Memorial Hall of Choi Ik-hyun opened in March this year and serves as a space to exhibit and learn about the life and philosophy of the esteemed scholar and independence activist.

It is located next to Mudeoksa Temple, where Choi Ik-hyun's spirit tablet is enshrined, and the house where he lived.

Choi Ik-hyun, a prominent scholar and statesman during the late Joseon and early Korean Empire periods, was also a leader in the anti-Japanese movement.

He fought against unjust power and foreign invasions based on the ideology of righteous governance.

Even at the age of 74, he demonstrated a practical spirit of patriotism by mobilizing troops for the country's sake.

At the Memorial Hall, visitors can explore Mudeoksa, the Choi Ik-hyun House, Yeongdang, and the historical sites nearby.

The hall commemorates Choi Ik-hyun's spirit by displaying his footprints and artifacts.

It features an area that introduces his life from birth to martyrdom through various exhibits.

The collection includes Choi Ik-hyun's writings, records, and personal items, providing a glimpse into his life.

The 'Experience Zone' offers various programs for visitors to engage in educational activities.

Choi Ik-hyun's life journey is marked by his academic pursuits, resistance against foreign powers, and his ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

In Cheongyang, where he lived for about six years, you can find his residence and Mudeoksa Temple, built in 1914 to honor his legacy.

Mudeoksa was established to commemorate Choi Ik-hyun's loyalty and his activities as an independence fighter.

The 'Gudongjeongsa' (the love room) in the Choi Ik-hyun House reflects his modest lifestyle.

This space is where he read and wrote, engaging in discussions with fellow scholars.

At the Memorial Hall, you can also participate in activities like postcard coloring and trying on traditional Korean attire, making it a great visit for families.

Choi Ik-hyun's portrait captures his determined spirit, reflecting the strength he showed even at an advanced age.

The hall displays various artifacts, including his clothing, shoes, and personal belongings, highlighting his scholarly contributions.

The emotional depiction of his life and contributions is palpable in the memorial's exhibits.

Outdoor performances of traditional dances and songs add to the cultural experience.

I also enjoyed a sound therapy session with singing bowls, which helped relax my mind and body.

The serene scenery of the area enhances the experience, making it a worthwhile visit to Cheongyang.

The Choi Ik-hyun Memorial Hall is a place where you can deeply feel the history that you've read about in textbooks.

This weekend, consider making a meaningful trip to Cheongyang, filled with blue skies and historical significance!

The Memorial Hall is located at 2 Naun-dong-gil, Mok-myeon, Cheongyang-gun, Chungcheongnam-do.

Opening hours are from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and admission is free.

Closed on Mondays and on New Year's Day, as well as during the Lunar New Year and Chuseok.
