Exploring Suju Palbong: A Hidden Gem in Chungju

Hello! I am Cha Bo-hyun, a social media supporter from Chungcheongbuk-do.
As the monsoon and summer heat intertwine, we find ourselves longing for refreshing streams and open landscapes.
Today, I visited Suju Palbong, a beloved long-time retreat for Chungju citizens, known for its beautiful scenery.
From fascinating stories related to kings, thrilling suspension bridges, majestic artificial waterfalls, pleasant camping areas, to the delicious cold soybean noodle soup that cools you down after a hike, I would like to introduce you to a day filled with diverse charms at Suju Palbong.
1. The Origin and Scenery of Suju Palbong, Linked to King Cheoljong's Dream

Suju Palbong has a spacious parking lot, making it easy to start your journey right away. The rocky peaks stretching along the Dalseong River create a magnificent sight, aptly named 'Eight Peaks Above Water.'
There is an interesting story related to King Cheoljong from the Joseon Dynasty. It is said that he described the landscape of eight peaks he dreamt of to his ministers, which resembled the scenery of Suju Palbong, prompting him to visit this place.
The area where the king is said to have played is now known as 'Eorimpo' and 'Wangdap Village.'
Climbing the stairs above the parking lot, you will find a quaint pavilion called 'Mowonjeong,' built in 1981 by a farmer to honor his parents.
Beyond Mowonjeong is the iconic suspension bridge of Suju Palbong.

Crossing the suspension bridge leads to the rocky trail towards Knife Rock and a scenic viewpoint. The highest point of Suju Palbong is known to be about 493m. I chose to head towards the viewpoint.
Although the distance is short, the rocky terrain and steep stairs make it advisable to wear comfortable sneakers or hiking boots.
After catching my breath, I arrived at the viewpoint! The view of Dalseong and Palbong Village from here made my effort worthwhile.
The river winding around the village resembled a delicately painted landscape.

2. The Secret of the Man-Made Beauty, Palbong Waterfall
After soaking in the views, I descended to the camping area.
Looking up from here, you can see the refreshing Palbong Waterfall.

Interestingly, this waterfall is not a natural formation. According to local information, it was created in 1963 when the waterway of Oga Stream was redirected towards Dalseong, and part of Knife Rock was artificially cut.
Although it is a man-made waterfall, the flowing water among the sharp cliffs blends perfectly with the surrounding scenery, showcasing stunning beauty.
3. A Safe Camping Paradise in Designated Areas
The Dalseong River flowing below Suju Palbong has been cherished for its sweet water, serving as Chungju's lifeline.
Due to its status as a water source protection area, cooking and camping are generally restricted, except in designated areas under Palbong Bridge.
Despite it being a weekday during my visit, many people were enjoying camping along the riverside.
With the majestic Suju Palbong as a backdrop, listening to the sound of water provides a natural healing experience.
4. A Refreshing Meal at Palbong Bean Field
After my day at Suju Palbong, I headed to the nearby Palbong Bean Field to satisfy my hunger.
This restaurant uses locally grown produce and makes tofu daily in a cauldron, having been featured on a popular TV show.
I was worried about dining alone, but the owner kindly prepared a table for me.
I ordered a bowl of cold soybean soup, which was delicious and came with beautifully arranged side dishes. The cold soup was rich and nutty, perfect after climbing the rugged mountain trails.
From the restaurant window, I enjoyed a view of Suju Palbong and the suspension bridge, making for a satisfying meal.
This weekend, why not embark on a safe summer outing to Chungju's Suju Palbong, where you can cross a thrilling suspension bridge and enjoy a hearty bowl of soybean soup in beautiful nature?
