As July arrives, bringing with it the intense summer heat and monsoon rains, travelers seek to escape the stifling city and find solace in the cool embrace of nature. Recently, the Towangseong Waterfall in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, has become a popular destination for couples and trekkers looking to enjoy a refreshing getaway, thanks to its majestic three-tiered waterfall and lush Oseolak Valley.

This area operates as a national park open shelter with no admission fees, making it perfect for a light outing without financial strain. Especially right after the rain during the day, a visit reveals a dramatic sight as the water volume peaks, cascading through massive rock formations.

The main attraction here is the continuous waterfall system, which measures 150m at the top, 80m in the middle, and 90m at the bottom, making it the longest continuous waterfall in South Korea. After being closed for about 45 years due to rockfall risks, a dedicated observation deck was installed in 2015, allowing visitors to enjoy the serene views.

Designated as a natural monument and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, this area boasts a pristine ecosystem and has been cherished by locals as a mystical natural spring and a breathtaking sight. Although it appears to be open 24/7, seasonal restrictions on entry times are strictly enforced, so it’s advisable to check the national park's official channels before visiting.

Starting from Seoraksan Small Park, the trail follows a gentle path for about 2.8 km one way, with a round trip taking approximately 3 hours. Fortunately, the first 1.2 km is very gradual, allowing families with strollers or wheelchairs to enjoy the refreshing sounds of water without much physical strain.

However, the real challenge begins after passing the Biryeong Waterfall, as the last 400m section is packed with over 900 steep metal deck stairs, leading to considerable fatigue. Reaching the vertical cliff's edge may leave your legs trembling, but the magnificent waterfall spreading out in all directions cools the surrounding air, alleviating the heat.

For those considering public transport, taking a bus from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal (lines 7 or 7-1) directly to Seoraksan Small Park is a great option. If driving, the parking fees are 6,000 won for small cars and 9,000 won for larger vehicles for up to 12 hours. Long-term parking over 12 hours increases to 10,000 won, so day visitors should manage their time wisely to avoid extra costs.

After descending, you can head to local eateries or charming cafes in Sokcho to unwind with a cool drink, perfectly wrapping up a day filled with nature's beauty and healing.
