Exploring Namcheon Valley: A Summer Retreat in Danyang
How are you spending this hot summer? Many people seek cool valleys during the summer, and I want to introduce a valley in Danyang, Chungbuk, where you can enjoy water activities and cooking.
The valley I will introduce this time is Namcheon Valley. First, let’s take a look at the history and origin of Namcheon.
Namcheon refers to the area from Namcheon-ri in Yeongchun-myeon to the confluence of the Namhan River.
It originates from Daesangol and Late Maegi of the Sobaeksan Mountain and flows down, merging with a tributary from Seonggol at Daeeogu, eventually flowing into the Namhan River in front of the Hariondal Tourist Area.
Once part of the old Yeongchun-gun region, the Yeongchun Confucian School was located in Daeeogu village, but it was relocated to Yeongchun-myeon in 1705. It is said that this area was a resting place for notable figures such as Yemun Seon-ryong.
The upper reaches of Namcheon are within Sobaeksan National Park, boasting clear waters and beautiful valleys, making it a popular summer retreat. Solbat Park, located in the middle of the valley, features a dense pine forest and clear water, making it an ideal spot for family water activities.
Unlike many valleys where you must enjoy meals while playing in the water, Namcheon Valley allows cooking. There are spaces along the valley to set up shade or mats for meals.
However, charcoal grilling is prohibited, and only cooking with a burner is allowed.
If you go a bit upstream along the waterway, there is a pavilion and more spacious areas to spread out your mats. Typically, in other valleys, you must rent a space next to the valley, but here, you can cook and set up for free, which is a unique charm.
There is a walking path along the valley, making it easy to find a good spot to enjoy water activities. Additionally, there are restaurants and convenience stores nearby for meals or snacks.
You can use the restrooms at the Solbat Park next to the rest area.
The water is so clear that you can see the bottom, which is well-maintained, making it easy to walk in the water.
I noticed people bending down to look into the water, likely catching freshwater snails, as the clarity suggests there are many of them.
As you go further upstream, there are spots with stronger currents and diverse scenery to enjoy.
The valley stretches long, and there are many pensions nearby, so those who find day trips inconvenient can opt for a stay.
While the lack of shade can be a downside, the cold valley water makes the sun feel less harsh.
The clear water is also home to plenty of fish.
If you enjoy catching fish and playing in the water with your children, there’s no better summer retreat.
Safety is paramount for water activities. There are life jackets and an automatic defibrillator available at the safety management post.
Life jackets can be rented for free by simply providing your name and contact information. Various sizes are available, making them suitable for children as well.
Three safety promises for enjoyable water activities: No swimming after 6 PM, no swimming while intoxicated, and no diving.
Water accidents are common during summer, but if everyone follows safety rules, we can all enjoy a safe summer.
There are two parking lots available.
One is close to the valley, and the other is a bit further down but spacious. If you have a lot of luggage, it's better to leave early and park next to the valley.
The lower parking lot isn't far, but walking in the hot summer can be a bit challenging.
