Exploring Historical Sites with GPS at Susungdae

Hello!

This time, we participated in a historical exploration of Susungdae organized by the Geochang Hyungsadan.

We visited the site of the 'GPS Orienteering at Susungdae'.

This program is part of the National Heritage Travel Project, taking place from April to November with a total of seven sessions.

The starting point and the main operation center is the Geochang Wood Culture Experience Center.

This program utilizes a GPS-based application to engage participants in finding significant cultural heritage sites in Susungdae while completing missions and collecting stamps.

The entrance and the interior of the experience center are adorned with welcoming banners and signs.

At the wood culture experience center, participants created wooden trays representing the iconic turtle rock of Susungdae and other major relics.

Students used sponges to stamp paint and completed patterns using a stencil technique.

The beautifully engraved patterns of Guyeon Seowon and Gwan Su Ru on the wooden tray were impressive.

Participants were highly engaged as they crafted their own souvenirs from Susungdae.

Next, we moved to Yosujeong, where we learned about its historical significance and enjoyed a traditional Korean music performance.

In front of Yosujeong, there is a monument commemorating the pine trees that survived Typhoon Sanba in 2012, which adds depth to its history.

Inside Yosujeong, a special stage showcased historical storytelling along with performances of the gayageum and haegeum.

Listening to traditional music blended with the sounds of nature allowed us to deeply experience the culture of Susungdae.

Students then unfolded a GPS map of Susungdae and actively searched for the next mission site.

Their engagement in exploring with the map and app was impressive.

At Guyeon Seowon, they listened to interesting explanations about the three stele in front of the seowon and participated in a quiz.

They examined the area under the wooden porch and completed workbook missions by stamping papers with Susungdae-related poems.

At Gwan Su Ru, students attentively listened to explanations about the historical significance of Susungdae.

They participated in crafting elegant silk fans and turtle-shaped candles with pink molds.

The joy of creating their own unique fan and candle was evident.

At the Turtle Theater, participants made colorful turtle keychains using mother-of-pearl pieces.

Completing the radiant turtle keychains brought satisfaction to everyone.

At the end of the day, participants returned to the Wood Culture Experience Center to watch the play "Do You Know, Turtle?".

This performance cleverly summarized the stories of Susungdae and the turtle rock, providing a perfect conclusion to the day's learning.

Thanks to the cool autumn weather, the outdoor exploration was very pleasant.

This program connected the processes of finding, listening, solving, creating, recording, and observing, making the history and culture of Susungdae easily approachable.
