Exploring Haddukje: A Serene Escape

On the eve of the summer solstice,
I visited Haddukje in Hapdeok-eup, Dangjin City,
to wrap up a long vacation at the tail end of spring,
spending my time 'slowly and leisurely'.
Upon arriving at Haddukje,
I found various events hosted by the Hadduk Water Culture Museum ongoing throughout the year.
One of them was the 'Haddukje Treasure Hunt Adventure Family Forest Experience',
which seemed like a great opportunity for families with children to participate and share experiences.
Unfortunately, my visit was on a Monday,
so I couldn’t access the museum,
but I was glad to know that there are programs available all year round.
I believe it’s a good habit to check the information boards wherever you go.
Haddukje was established during the Later Baekje period by Gyeon Hwon,
who cultivated land here and stationed 12,000 soldiers and 6,000 horses.
The embankment was built by these soldiers and has historical significance.
Originally a reservoir, it has now transformed into agricultural land,
and the area is known for its abundance of lotus flowers,
making it a popular destination for visitors in the summer.
As I walked down to the waterfront park,
I noticed white fluff floating in the air,
which turned out to be the cotton-like seeds of willow trees,
evolved to be carried by the wind.
The paths lined with willows at Haddukje encourage a slow pace,
and walking barefoot feels delightful.
Currently, Haddukje is undergoing renovations,
to manage the overgrown lotus plants and enhance the surroundings.
With new landscaping and safety facilities being added,
the revitalization of Haddukje is highly anticipated.
By the end of May, the waterfront park will be adorned with yellow rapeseed flowers,
and in June, various lotus flowers will bloom,
filling the area with vibrant colors.
Haddukje offers numerous photo spots,
and it has become a trendy location lately.
A pair of white-cheeked pintails, which used to be migratory birds,
now leisurely glide across the pond.
Haddukje is not only home to various lotus species,
but it also features a rural theme park nearby,
where visitors can experience traditional farming culture.
The Hadduk Cathedral, a significant site for the Catholic Church in Korea,
is also located nearby, adding to the area's cultural richness.
I believe that true relaxation comes from within.
Even in our busy lives, taking time for a relaxed schedule is essential.
Let’s enjoy the pace of life at Haddukje!
