Exploring Geoje: A Trip to Maemi Castle and MemMem Cafe
29, Bokhang-gil, Jangmok-myeon, Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do

Geoje Island Adventure with Lee Hae-young, Representative of Cheonman Tourism Geoje!
This trip's itinerary included a place I've always wanted to visit, a spot I'd only seen on TV and social media. That place is Geoje Maemi Castle! The story of how one person, having lost all their crops to Typhoon Maemi, spent years building this massive castle alone to protect against future disasters, is incredibly touching. I was thrilled to finally visit as part of this familiarization trip.
The magnificent castle rising above the blue sea is none other than Maemi Castle, a famous Geoje landmark. Initially, I thought it was just a small stone wall on a hillside, but I was amazed by its scale when I saw it in person. Hearing the story behind its construction made it even more moving. It's hard to believe that this peaceful sea can turn into a devastating force during a typhoon.

Maemi Castle is a popular destination, even arriving early, there were many visitors already there. The only downside is the limited parking space, understandable since it wasn't originally planned as a tourist site. The entrance to Maemi Castle is lined with shops, a sign of how its popularity has boosted the local economy. Before entering the castle, I checked the information board, which listed the rules for visitors.
I couldn't help but marvel at the sight. To think someone built this all alone!
I can only imagine the years of blood, sweat, and tears that went into creating it. Now, it stands as a magnificent castle, welcoming visitors.
The castle walls, reminiscent of medieval Europe, blended harmoniously with the surrounding nature. It was much larger than I expected, and I was surprised as I explored it. The scenes I had seen in photos were just a small part of the whole experience. I took my time walking around, taking in the entirety of Maemi Castle.
I also loved the trees around the castle walls. It seems like they are constantly maintaining the area. I saw someone who appeared to be a local resident cleaning up. Perhaps that's why it's so well-preserved.
I tried to find my own unique photo spots. Not a fan of taking the same photos as everyone else, I searched for my own angles. I took a shot from the top of the stairs on the highest part of the wall, looking out at the sea. My friend and I explored further, looking for more unique photo opportunities. We found some spots that captured our own personal style.
I wanted to capture a full shot, but there were so many visitors that I quickly gave up and started heading back! Meanwhile, my friend was busy taking photos for a group. She looked so lovely helping others.
Geoje's Maemi Castle offers little shade and can get very hot. Be sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, and a parasol. And don't forget to apply sunscreen!
Maemi Castle MemMem Cafe
Address: 1st floor, Building 2, 19, Bokhang-gil, Jangmok-myeon, Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do
Hours: 09:00 ~ 19:00
MemMem Cafe is located at the entrance to Maemi Castle. It's famous for its shaved ice and ice cream, the perfect way to cool down.
I was surprised by the reasonable prices. A cafe latte, which I love, was only 4,500 won. Usually, coffee at tourist spots or seaside cafes costs between 7,000 and 9,000 won, but this place was much more affordable. Even the prices of the ades and ice cream were very reasonable.
We stepped inside the cafe to escape the heat and enjoy a cool drink. The air conditioning quickly chased away the heat. You could even create framed photos with your own memories.
First, we needed a coffee fix. The cool coffee perked me right up. I was curious, so we ordered the half-and-half shaved ice. We chose the traditional red bean shaved ice and the mango shaved ice. You can choose your own flavors for the half-and-half option.
The inside of the cafe is nice, but it's also famous for its stairway to heaven. Of course, we couldn't resist climbing up to the stairway to heaven photo spot.
I kept telling my friend that it wasn't a skirt, but culottes, but she was still worried. Seriously, they're pants!
Geoje Trip!
Visiting Maemi Castle, a famous summer vacation spot in Geoje, and enjoying a cool drink at the nearby, affordable MemMem Cafe... It was a perfect trip.
