Exploring Ban Ki-moon's Birthplace and Peace Land

On a day when the cool breeze and clear sky stirred my heart, I visited the birthplace of Ban Ki-moon and Ban Ki-moon Peace Land located in Wonnam-myeon, Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do.
Following in the footsteps of the 8th UN Secretary-General who worked for world peace, I felt the serene breath of history and enjoyed the relaxation that nature offers amidst beautiful scenery.
The first place I visited was the birthplace where former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spent his childhood.
The birthplace was a smaller and modest thatched house than I had expected.
Though it was a simple space without extravagant decorations, walking along the neat porch and the low earthen stone wall allowed me to sense the deep history contained within.
It was a space where a boy dreamed of the world stage, and I could feel the history that began in a small room.
As I explored the birthplace, I realized how Ban Ki-moon rose from this small rural village in Eumseong to become a leader encompassing 193 countries worldwide.
His diplomatic journey began during his school years when he visited the United States.
While attending school in Chungju, he was selected as a student representative for the Red Cross and had the opportunity to meet President John F. Kennedy, which inspired him to pursue a lifelong goal of becoming a diplomat.
After graduating from Seoul National University with a degree in diplomacy, he began his public service career after passing the Foreign Service Exam.
During his 10 years as UN Secretary-General, he achieved monumental accomplishments that changed the future of humanity, including the historic Paris Agreement on climate change, which involved over 190 countries, and the establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals aimed at eradicating poverty and preserving the environment.
He also significantly contributed to gender equality and women's rights by founding UN Women.
After exploring the birthplace, I walked to a small pond created along a gentle waterway nearby.
Lotus flowers shyly peeking above the water greeted visitors warmly.
With pink and white petals blossoming among the lily pads, I enjoyed a heartwarming view as I strolled around the pond.
Next, I moved to Ban Ki-moon Peace Land, located right next to the birthplace.
The spacious plaza, surrounded by mountains, offered a sense of openness.
Benches lined under the trees provided a perfect spot to sit and feel the natural breeze.
Thanks to the green trees and pristine scenery all around, I could escape my busy daily life and enjoy a leisurely break.
Entering the plaza, I was greeted by a wall filled with flags from various countries, and in the center stood the grand UN symbol tower representing Peace Land.
It was an impressive place that made me reflect on the meaning of world peace.
Especially, the two blooming red and purple hibiscus trees on either side of the symbol tower added to the beautiful scene.
The deep pink and rich purple hibiscus flowers, combined with the blue sky and the symbol tower, created a picturesque view perfect for photographs.
Ban Ki-moon's birthplace and Peace Land offer historical value, serene lotus flowers, and vibrant hibiscus flower paths, making it an ideal retreat to stroll in nature without any burden on weekends.
