The charm of traveling in Busan goes beyond just the sea and the vibrant cityscape.
Walking through the old market alleys and greeting the merchants,
I discovered the essence of Busan while preparing food with ingredients I personally selected.
Today, I would like to introduce the 'Good For You Tour,'
a local experience program that combines the history, food, and people of Gupo!
Are you ready to dive into the charm of this unique tour?✨
1. Gupo Station
The tour begins at KTX Gupo Station.
Many foreign tourists participate in this tour.
As a kickoff, the guide hands out a cool bottle of water and a Yangsan to each participant!
Additionally, a 5,000 won gift certificate is provided for participants to buy snacks at Gupo Market.
This thoughtful preparation considering the hot weather and market shopping was impressive.
2. Gupo Manse Street
After leaving Gupo Station, we head towards the market along Gupo Manse Street.
There are sculptures and signs marking the traces of the Gupo Market Manse Movement from 1919.
The short walk from the train station to the market seamlessly connected Gupo's past and present.
Unlike tours that only visit famous landmarks by bus,
we could closely observe the expressions of the alleys and the history of the area!
3. Gupo Market
Upon entering Gupo Market, you are greeted by colorful fruits, vegetables, seafood, rice cakes, fish cakes, and side dishes.
The market exploration takes about an hour!
The guide explained the ingredients sold and the culture of Korean markets.
It was impressive to see foreign tourists asking numerous questions about unfamiliar fish and food.
Even when communication was challenging, the merchants kindly responded with gestures and expressions.
I realized that Gupo Market is not just a place to buy goods,
but a vibrant cultural space where people meet.
Participants can choose the snacks they want with the gift certificate provided.
Afterward, they can either take the snacks back to their accommodation or enjoy them during the tour.
The ingredients for the cooking class were purchased separately by the guide and brought to the experience location!
4. Cooking Class
After shopping at the market, we moved to the Sharing Kitchen at Gupo Youth Center.
In a clean space equipped with a large cooking counter and utensils, a Korean cooking class takes place.
The dishes we made that day were fried tteokbokki and bibim-guksu!
We stir-fried rice cakes and green onions, adding seasonings to complete the spicy fried tteokbokki,
and prepared bibim-guksu by mixing boiled noodles with vegetables and sauce.
Participants used the stove and prepared ingredients themselves,
allowing for a deeper understanding of the cooking process beyond just tasting.
We gathered around a table to enjoy the completed dishes together.
As the stories from the market transitioned into cooking and dining, the distance between participants quickly closed.
5. Making Mother-of-Pearl Keychains
After the meal, we continued with a hands-on experience of making keychains using traditional mother-of-pearl.
We attached finely cut pieces of mother-of-pearl on a black background to complete our Korean name keychains.
The handmade keychains became unique souvenirs from our Busan trip.
I recommend participating in the survey and review event to receive local craft beer that captures the essence of Busan!
Location: KTX Gupo Station (82 Gupo Manse-gil, Buk-gu, Busan)
Admission Fee: 30,000 won per person (includes travel insurance, experience fee, and 5,000 won gift certificate for shopping)
Additional 10,000 won if using transportation from Busan Station.
Operating Period and Hours: Every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from June to November 2026,
Gathering at Gupo Station at 2 PM, tour ends at 7 PM.
