Experience the Magical Hahoe Seonyu Julbul Nori Fire Festival

Today, I'm excited to introduce you to a truly special traditional Korean culture and festival.
It's the Hahoe Seonyu Julbul Nori, held in Andong!
Think modern fireworks festivals are spectacular?
Well, the fire play enjoyed by our ancestors was on a whole other level of beauty!
What is Hahoe Seonyu Julbul Nori?
It's a luxurious fire play that noblemen of the Joseon Dynasty enjoyed on boats in the river around the seventh lunar month (when the full moon rises)!
'Seonyu,' meaning enjoying music and dance on a boat, combined with the traditional fire play 'Julbul Nori,' gave birth to the Hahoe Seonyu Julbul Nori.
It proceeds in four stages:
1. Julbul (String Fire)
First, 1000-1500 charcoal bags are hung on 5 strings, each 250m long!
These charcoal bags are made of mulberry charcoal powder + dried mugwort pith + Korean paper.
You can enjoy the sparks flying in the wind as they slowly burn for about an hour.
2. Nakwha (Falling Flowers)
Before throwing Nakwha from the Buyongdae Cliff, make a wish and shout, "Nakwha-ya!" as you throw bundles of dried pine.
You can see the flames growing larger as they fall and catch the wind, exploding as they hit the rocks!
3. Dalgyalbul (Egg Fire)
Fill eggshells with oil, light them, and float them on the river.
Sending these down the Hwacheon stream at the end creates a truly mystical sight as they drift along the river.
4. Hwaseon (Flower Boat)
Hwaseon is a special boat with dragon paintings on both sides and decorated with brightly colored lanterns!
A large boat in Hahoe Village was used to transport cattle and farming equipment, and the boat used for Seonyu Julbul Nori is said to be this same large boat!
