Enjoying Myeoncheon Eupseong 200%: Eats, Strolls, and Free Co-working at 'Myeoncheon Lounge'

Myeoncheon Eupseong is a retro-infused original downtown area of Dangjin. During the Three Kingdoms period, it belonged to Baekje's Hyegun, and during the Later Three Kingdoms period, it was part of Gungye's Taebong Kingdom. In the 21st year of King Sejong's reign, a fortress was built on flat land to prepare for the invasion of Japanese pirates, and until the late Joseon Dynasty, it was the center of Myeoncheon's military administration.
Now, it has become a representative attraction in Dangjin, where visitors can enjoy the retro atmosphere. It features Goljeongji Pond, where cherry blossoms and lotus flowers bloom, an 1,100-year-old ginkgo tree, and Gunja Pavilion. It also holds the footprints of historical figures such as Bokji-gyeom, Park Ji-won, and Won Yong-eun.
Furthermore, Myeoncheon Eupseong Art Museum, remodeled from a post office, and the small bookstore 'Old Future' attract many people throughout the four seasons. A shared office for travelers has been established in Myeoncheon Eupseong, allowing visitors to enjoy both work and relaxation simultaneously.
A stroll around Myeoncheon Eupseong involves following the fortress walls built of large stones. Various attractions from the Joseon Dynasty to the present day are concentrated inside and outside the fortress.
The reason a fortress was built in Myeoncheon is that it was the county seat that governed Dangjin as its subordinate county until 1914. In peacetime, it controlled the county, but during Japanese pirate invasions, it sheltered the soldiers and civilians inside the fortress. Until about 100 years ago, there were no civilian houses inside the fortress, but now there are scattered houses and shops.
This is the 모습 of Myeoncheon Eupseong's guest house. It was first built in 1433 and used as Myeoncheon Public Elementary School during the Japanese colonial period. However, it was demolished when the school expanded and relocated, and was restored in 2022.
With the Mongsan and Amisan mountain ranges in the background, an 1,100-year-old ginkgo tree stands in the front yard. Below it are Goljeongji Pond and the art museum, and in front is the bookstore 'Old Future'.
Myeoncheon Lounge opened on the second floor of the Hwallyeok Baraji Welfare Center, next to the Myeoncheon Administrative Welfare Center, which is adjacent to Myeoncheon Eupseong. On the first floor, there is a small Myeoncheon bathhouse where you can relieve travel fatigue, and on the second floor, there is the Myeoncheon Small Library, a Dream Tree Shelter, and the Myeoncheon Lounge multipurpose hall.
The path from Myeoncheon Eupseong to Myeoncheon Lounge passes through the Hwallyeok Baraji Community Garden. The current scenery as autumn ends is somewhat desolate, but from spring to early autumn, various flowers will bloom and fall.
The Hwallyeok Baraji Welfare Center was selected for a contest by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and was completed in 2022 after a five-year preparation period. In October 2025, facilities for residents will share some space with travelers visiting Myeoncheon Eupseong.
The entire first floor consists of a bathhouse, with separate sections for men and women. The usage fee is very affordable at 6,000 won.
It's a great place to relieve travel fatigue. Operating hours start early in the morning at 6 am and run until 7 pm.
The closing day is Monday, and it was available on weekends. Pass through the first floor and go up to the second floor. The existing facilities, the small library and Dream Tree Shelter, are introduced along with the newly opened multipurpose room, Myeoncheon Lounge.

Dangjin City's workation shared office started operating Waemok Lounge at Waemok Village Beach in May, and Myeoncheon Lounge will be piloted in the fall.
Reservations can be made in advance at the Dangjin Rural Revitalization Support Center website or by calling or visiting. The website provides information on a total of 8 areas, including the Myeoncheon Hwallyeok Baraji Welfare Center.
Myeoncheon Lounge is equipped with 5 tables for 4 people and facilities such as a beam projector and wireless microphone, making it ideal for clubs, meetings, and small gatherings. Simple drinks are also available.
While Waemok Village's Waemok Lounge was a good shared office for individuals, Myeoncheon Lounge was great for groups. It seems that many people are already using it. It was somewhat quiet on weekdays, but reservations are confirmed every week on weekends.
Next to Myeoncheon Lounge is the Dream Tree Shelter, and across from it is the Myeoncheon Small Library. The Dream Tree Shelter is an after-school care center and is only open on weekdays.
It was open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. It was firmly closed when I visited on the weekend.
I also looked around the Myeoncheon Small Library. It is closed on Mondays and Sundays and open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM from Tuesday to Saturday. It is a small size, and the scenery around Myeoncheon Eupseong can be seen from the window. A reading room inspired by Park Ji-won and modern reading tables coexist.
It connects the past and present through roof tiles excavated from Myeoncheon Eupseong and Yeonam Park Ji-won's study.
When traveling to Myeoncheon Eupseong, remember Myeoncheon Lounge at the Myeoncheon Hwallyeok Baraji Welfare Center. It is a workation shared office open to everyone, where you can work, rest, and relax at the same time.
