When you want to escape the concrete jungle of the city and face the refreshing blue sea, the coastline of Yeongilman in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a top destination for weekend getaways for office workers and couples. Recently, a traditional Hanok-style building majestically standing in the sea has captured attention on social media, offering a variety of scenic views from sunrise to vibrant nightscapes.

This spot operates as a free public area where anyone can stroll without an entrance fee, making it an ideal place for families. Particularly, visiting in July allows you to enjoy the cool sea breeze from the East Sea, refreshing you while the sunset paints the horizon red, creating a romantic atmosphere with the city lights.

The most distinctive visual feature of this attraction is the 80-meter-long pier extending from the sandy beach into the sea. At the end of the pier, a two-story traditional pavilion adorned with 8,653 intricately placed tiles reveals its grandeur. This structure is considered a rare blend of modern maritime technology and classic architectural beauty.

With its design creating an illusion of a pavilion floating in the sea, it is supported by massive pillars firmly anchored to the seabed. Known as Yeongiljeong, this space offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view year-round, and during summer nights, gentle landscape lighting enhances the deep ambiance of the night sea.

The observatory transforms throughout the day, enticing visitors to return multiple times. In the early morning, you can enjoy the majestic sunrise rising over the horizon, making it a popular spot for those eager to greet the sun. During the day, you can admire the vibrant scenery of the Posco industrial complex and downtown Pohang across the blue sea, while at night, the city lights reflect beautifully on the water's surface.

From July 11 to August 23, the beach adjacent to the observatory officially opens, operating from 9 AM to 7 PM. Visitors can enjoy refreshing swims and sandy play during the day, and as the sun sets, crossing the pier to the cool pavilion becomes a highly efficient summer itinerary.

For those driving, there is a public parking lot nearby with about 100 spaces. The fee starts at 500 won for the first 20 minutes, with an additional charge of 200 won for every 10 minutes thereafter. It turns to paid parking during peak hours from noon to 9 PM, but parking is free during early mornings, late nights, and all day on Sundays, providing a budget-friendly tip.

If you find it hard to leave the Yeongildae area, consider combining your visit with a trip to nearby Hwanho Park and the thrilling Space Walk for a scenic night view. Experience the unique curved metal track of the Space Walk first, then descend to the beach to conclude your day with the traditional tranquility of the pavilion.

A suggested itinerary is to have a hearty meal at a local sashimi restaurant, then enter the pier just in time to capture the moment when the night lights turn on. This destination offers the best value for experiencing the sound of waves and the romantic night views of the East Sea without any additional costs.
