Discovering Yeongildae Observatory: A Coastal Gem in Pohang
When you want to escape the concrete jungle of the city and face the refreshing blue sea, the coastline of Yeongilman in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a top destination for weekend getaways for office workers and couples. This spot operates as a free public area where anyone can stroll without an entrance fee, making it an ideal place for families. The most distinctive visual feature of this attraction is the 80-meter-long pier extending from the sandy beach into the sea. At the end of the pier, a two-story traditional pavilion adorned with 8,653 intricately placed tiles reveals its grandeur. With its design creating an illusion of a pavilion floating in the sea, it is supported by massive pillars firmly anchored to the seabed. Known as Yeongiljeong, this space offers a stunning 360-degree panoramic view year-round, and during summer nights, gentle landscape lighting enhances the deep ambiance of the night sea.
The observatory transforms throughout the day, enticing visitors to return multiple times. For those driving, there is a public parking lot nearby with about 100 spaces. The fee starts at 500 won for the first 20 minutes, with an additional charge of 200 won for every 10 minutes thereafter. It turns to paid parking during peak hours from noon to 9 PM, but parking is free during early mornings, late nights, and all day on Sundays, providing a budget-friendly tip.
