Sayangdo, often referred to as the jewel of Tongyeong in Gyeongnam, is a sacred place for those who enjoy hiking on islands. Although its elevation is only in the upper 300 meters, the mountain range offers a grandeur and breathtaking rock formations that rival those of Seoraksan, making it a surprisingly captivating destination.

Recently, it has gained popularity among MZ generation couples as a perfect spot for life-changing photos, as visitors can enjoy this stunning scenery with just the cost of the ferry, without worrying about parking fees or entrance fees. On clear days, the view extends all the way to Jirisan's Cheonwangbong peak, earning it the nickname 'Jiriman Mountain' due to its expansive vistas.

The journey to Sayangdo is surprisingly diverse and economical. Taking the ferry from Tongyeong's Gaochi Port takes about 40 minutes, and parking is free, alleviating any long-term parking concerns. For those looking to arrive quicker, the ferry from Goseong's Yongampo Port is recommended, taking just 20 minutes, making it popular among day-trippers.

Alternatively, the ferry from Sacheon’s Samcheong Port also takes around 40 minutes, with a one-way fare of about 5,000 KRW for adults, making it very affordable. The absence of an entrance fee means that visitors can enjoy some of the best coastal hiking in the country for the price of a cup of coffee.

If you're eager for a serious hike, the trail from Donji Village to Oknyobong is ideal. This roughly 8 km route takes about 4.5 hours, and the stunning blue sea on both sides makes the hike enjoyable. However, wearing hiking boots is essential due to the rocky sections.

For those with less stamina or who prefer a shorter hike, a 3-hour abbreviated course starting from Okdong is recommended. This route efficiently covers the key points, including Bulmosan and Gamabong, making it a perfect choice for beginners or those short on time.

The highlight of hiking on Sayangdo is the two suspension bridges connecting Hyangbong and Yeonjibong, which span 61 meters. Standing on these bridges offers breathtaking views of the steep cliffs below and the beauty of Hallyeo Maritime National Park. The slight swaying adds to the thrill of the hike.

After crossing the suspension bridge, the trail to Oknyobong features very steep stairs, so caution is advised. However, the view from the summit is overwhelmingly beautiful, instantly alleviating any fatigue. Bringing gloves can be helpful for gripping ropes or handrails safely.

After descending, it's time to explore the island's other attractions. Visiting the shrine dedicated to General Choi Young from the Goryeo Dynasty offers insight into the island's rich history. If you want to cool off after your hike, head to Daehang Beach, known for its fine sand and well-equipped facilities for relaxation.

The ideal itinerary recommended by Travel Talk is to arrive early in the morning, complete the hike, and then enjoy water activities or camping at Daehang Beach before taking the afternoon ferry back. Be sure to book your ferry tickets online in advance, especially on weekends when they tend to sell out quickly.
