Discovering No Ryeok Do: A Hidden Gem in Jangheung
전남 장흥군 회진면 덕산리

Hello!
This is Jangheung Travel!
Today, we're introducing No Ryeok Do (노력도), a small island rising beyond the Hoejin Bridge in Jangheung!
Located in Deoksan-ri, Hoejin-myeon, Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, No Ryeok Do can only be accessed by crossing the Hoejin Bridge.
Jangheung's No Ryeok Do, along with the Jeju Island Seongsanpo Port route, significantly contributed to the construction of the Hoejin Bridge. It's said to be the island with the fastest port access to Jeju Island. (However, passenger ferry services to Jeju Port are currently suspended.)
From No Ryeok Do Port, you can see the Goheung Peninsula stretching out in the distance. To reach Wando's Geumdang Island, you would take a boat from No Ryeok Port.
There's a folktale about the island's name. It's said that Jangsa-ri resembles a snake, and Jukdo looks like a raccoon. The snake was coming to eat the raccoon, but a 'Noryong' (old dragon) was located in No Ryeok Do, so it stayed in Jukdo.
Therefore, the island was called Noryongdo because the Noryong stayed there, and it was later changed to No Ryeok Do.
Another tale suggests that the island was named No Ryeok Do because the water was good, and the elderly people lived long lives. There's also a story that the Hoejin military commander (Manho) feared harm from the Noryong, so he used the characters for 'old' (老) and 'strength' (力) to name it No Ryeok Do.
Did you know that No Ryeok Do is an island of traditional folk customs, where they still continue to hold the Jeongwol Daeboreum Dangsanje (shrine festival) and a 풍어제 (pung-eoje, good catch festival)?
On the 14th day of the first lunar month, they perform a ritual to pray for the village's well-being and a bountiful catch. In July and August, they hold ceremonies for the Dragon Kings of the East and West Seas at 'Cheongseonggeum' in the west and 'Geomuneori' in the east of the island.
The ritual officers are selected from the residents a month in advance, following the old ways. Nine people are chosen, and then three of them are selected again to conduct the ritual, preserving the long-standing tradition.
With its continued traditions and peaceful scenery throughout the island, <Jangheung No Ryeok Do> is the perfect island to explore in seasons like these.
Before it gets colder, why not enjoy the sea breeze and take a leisurely stroll along the island paths?
