Located near Seoul, the Jungmisan Natural Recreation Forest, known as the 'lungs of the Seoul suburbs,' has reopened after a long break. Following a significant remodeling that began in February 2025, the old facilities have been revitalized into a modern recreation space that harmonizes beautifully with nature.
This reopening focuses not only on facility upgrades but also on enhancing visitor convenience while protecting the forest's ecosystem. Thanks to its location that offers stunning views of Yongmunsan and the Namhan River, competition for weekend reservations has been fierce since the announcement of its reopening.
One of the most notable changes is the quality improvement of the accommodation. Among the newly built 12 cabins, 8 are constructed using 100% domestic wood, filling the rooms with a refreshing phytoncide aroma that alleviates stress. The design emphasizes natural materials, providing a unique experience of sleeping in the forest.
For camping enthusiasts, additional spaces have been created. Ten new camping decks have been installed, allowing guests to enjoy the fresh air of Yangpyeong and stargaze at night. However, due to high demand during the initial opening phase, it’s essential to check the reservation opening times on the 'Forest Na-deul' platform of the Korea Forest Service.
At Jungmisan Natural Recreation Forest, you can enjoy various experiences beyond just accommodation. The forest interpretation program, held daily at 10 AM and 2 PM, is free and provides hidden stories of the forest, making it a hit with families. Although the program is closed on Tuesdays, it is highly recommended for day visitors on other days.
If you're looking for a more active experience, orienteering is a great option. For a fee of 10,000 KRW for adults and 6,000 KRW for children, participants can explore the forest with a map and compass, creating unique memories for families or couples. Additionally, various experiences like making mountain puzzles for 3,000 KRW ensure there's never a dull moment.
One of the most attractive aspects of this destination is its affordable entrance fee. Adults pay only 1,000 KRW, teenagers 600 KRW, and children 300 KRW to enjoy the beautiful forest. Parking fees are also reasonable, at just 3,000 KRW for medium and small cars, making it hard to find such value near the metropolitan area.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Wi-Fi is not available in the recreation forest, allowing for a digital detox, but it's important to prepare for any necessary communications. Visitors should also bring personal toiletries, and barbecue facilities may be restricted during fire prevention periods, so checking official announcements is advisable.
After exploring the recreation forest, consider visiting a nearby Jungmisan Makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) restaurant or bakery. The buckwheat noodles, known for their delightful aroma, are a local specialty. After your meal, enjoy a scenic drive along the Nongdachi Pass to take in the beautiful views of the Namhan River. It's only about a 20-minute drive, making it a perfect addition to a half-day itinerary.
As night falls, stargazing at the Jungmisan Observatory is also recommended. Spending a leisurely afternoon in the forest and then admiring the starry night sky is a popular choice for couples.
