Discover the Hidden Gems of Yesan

Hello!
Welcome to Yesan County :)
As we seek a tranquil escape from the bustling city,
are you pondering where to go for some healing?
Today, we would like to introduce two hidden gems in Yesan.
Beyond just simple old houses,
we have the Su-dang House and the Chusa House,
which embody the passionate loyalty of the late Joseon period and artistic spirit.
Shall we embark on a time travel to these historic homes in Yesan,
where every step feels like stepping into a painting?
Su-dang House
Su-dang House is the ancestral home of Lee Nam-kyu,
a scholar and independence activist from the late Joseon period.
Founded in 1637 by Jeonju Lee,
the granddaughter-in-law of A-gye Lee San-hae,
the house has retained its current form since its restoration in 1846.
It showcases high architectural value,
reflecting the typical characteristics of Yangban houses in the Ho-seo region.
Entering through the main gate,
you will see the main house and the servant quarters forming a 'ㅁ' shape,
with the love room positioned at the front,
allowing you to feel the elegance of a Joseon-era upper-class residence.
Sitting on the porch, gazing at the spacious yard,
you can almost feel the deep patriotic sentiments shared by scholars of old.
Su-dang House is a place where the geometric lines of traditional Hanok are truly captivating.
Capture stunning photos as you follow the view from the love room porch towards the main house!
This will enhance the serene atmosphere.
In the late afternoon, when the light casts long shadows,
sitting on the main hall's porch and capturing silhouette photos can be a great highlight.
Chusa House
Chusa House is where the renowned calligrapher and epigrapher,
Kim Jeong-hee, known as Chusa, was born and raised.
Built under the command of King Yeongjo,
the grand house consists of 53 rooms funded by contributions from various districts in Chungcheong-do.
Crafted by carpenters from the royal palace,
the house exhibits remarkable elegance and refinement.
Currently, some parts of the servant quarters have unfortunately been lost,
leaving around 34 rooms open to visitors.
Chusa House harmonizes beautifully with its natural surroundings.
Visiting between late March and early April allows you to witness the stunning scenery,
with red plum blossoms, white pines, and daffodils.
The rich colors of the Hanok contrast beautifully with the vibrant hues of spring.
Experience various traditional calligraphy and cultural programs at the Yesan Chusa House Experience Center,
including writing in the Chusa style, painting orchids and winter landscapes, and rubbing techniques.
The center is open from 9 AM to 5 PM, closed on Mondays,
and offers weekend experiences with advance reservations available.
Bring your children along to create special memories!
