Bogildo Island, located in Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, is gaining attention as the top healing destination in the southern region of South Korea, thanks to its stunning natural beauty and the enduring legacy of Joseon Dynasty scholars. This historical island captivated the renowned 17th-century poet Yoon Seon-do, who resided here for nearly a decade, enchanted by its picturesque landscapes.

Since being designated as part of the Dadohaehaesang National Park in 1981, Bogildo has maintained its pristine natural resources. The island is a vibrant natural art gallery, offering a variety of attractions without the burden of entrance fees, making it a cost-effective travel destination.

One of Bogildo's greatest appeals is that all major attractions, including Buyongdong Garden (Seoyeonjeong and Nakseojae), Yesongri Beach, and Buyongri Camellia Forest, are free to enter. Open year-round, visitors can comfortably enjoy the island's nature and culture.

Located deep within the island, Buyongdong is named after its valley, which resembles a lotus flower, as noted by Yoon Seon-do. The 'Seoyeonjeong' pavilion, harmoniously set with a pond, exemplifies the finest traditional garden architecture of the Joseon era, showcasing the essence of Joseon literary culture alongside Yoon Seon-do's residence, 'Nakseojae.' This is also where the famous poem 'Eobusa-sisa' was completed.

As you turn your gaze to the coast, you'll encounter Yesongri Beach, a massive 2 km long pebble beach that is 50 meters wide. The soothing sound of pebbles rolling with the waves creates a serene atmosphere, while the lush evergreen forest, designated as a natural monument, surrounds the beach like a backdrop, offering a unique landscape.

If you visit during the right season, you can also enjoy the breathtaking sight of blooming red camellias in the Buyongri Camellia Forest. To capture the perfect photo, check the blooming schedule in advance to plan your visit accordingly.

Experiencing both the sunrise and sunset in one day can be tight, so it's recommended to plan at least a two-day itinerary. Bogildo can be easily accessed by ferry from Wando Hwaheungpo Port or Haenam Daegeun Port, taking about 30-40 minutes with a stopover at Nohwa-do. Once on the island, you can either bring your vehicle on the ferry or use local transportation.

To fully appreciate the sunrise at Yesongri Beach and the sunset from Seonchang-ri, a one-day visit is quite rushed. Therefore, checking the ferry schedule in advance and allowing for a more leisurely stay of at least one night is highly recommended.

The highlight of a trip to Bogildo is ascending to 'Dongcheon Seoksil,' where Yoon Seon-do enjoyed contemplation, known as 'the pure land of Buyongdong.' From the small pavilion perched on the rocky cliffs, the panoramic view of Bogildo and the blue waters of the Dadohae resemble a beautiful ink painting.

Bogildo Island, where breathtaking natural beauty and historical narratives coexist, is a destination that rivals the famous coastal sceneries of Southeast Asia. This weekend, consider escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life and planning a serene island trek to rejuvenate your mind and body.
