Commemorating Liberation Day in Jeju Island: A Historical Journey

Hello,
I'm Jeju-앓이, a travel creator who finds time in a busy life to explore and share travel experiences.
August 15th is Liberation Day, commemorating the day in 1945 when Korea regained its sovereignty from Japan.
With the holiday falling near the weekend, many of you might be planning a golden vacation.
While trips focused on food and entertainment are great, visiting historical sites related to Liberation Day can be a meaningful experience.
This post introduces five historical sites in Jeju Island that are related to Liberation Day and worth visiting.
Here are the top 3 Anti-Japanese Movements in Jeju:
✅ Jocheon Manse Movement
✅ Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement
✅ Haenyeo (Women Divers) Anti-Japanese Movement

Birthplace of the Jeju Anti-Japanese Movement: Jocheon Manse Park & Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall
Jocheon Manse Park is the historical site where the Jocheon Manse Movement, one of the three major anti-Japanese movements in Jeju, took place.
Today, the park features the March 1st Independence Movement Memorial Tower and the Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall, which exhibits historical materials related to the movement.

It's also the end point of Olle Trail Course 18, known for its beautiful scenery, which I've visited a few times.
It's a great place to take a stroll and explore in a peaceful atmosphere.

A Hidden Historical Site in Hallasan Mountain: Birthplace of the Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement

Muo Beopjeongsa is a temple located at the foot of Hallasan Mountain in Jeju Island and a historical site where the Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement took place in 1918.
The monks of Beopjeongsa, along with local residents, prepared and carried out an organized anti-Japanese movement, but unfortunately, it was suppressed by the Japanese colonial government in just two days.

Currently, only traces of the temple remain, as the Japanese colonial government burned down the temple buildings in retaliation for the anti-Japanese movement.
The Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement Site is also the starting point of the Camellia Trail, Section 4 of the Hallasan Mountain Trail.
In December 2024, the Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement Exhibition Hall opened, allowing visitors to learn about the spirit of the Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement.

Nearby Attractions: Seogwipo Natural Recreation Forest, perfect for forest trekking.
Visiting both the Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement Exhibition Hall and the recreation forest would make a wonderful trip.

A Place to Commemorate the Haenyeo (Women Divers) Who Resisted Japanese Exploitation: Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement Memorial Tower & Haenyeo Museum

The Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement was a large-scale anti-Japanese movement that took place in January 1932 in the areas of Gujwa-eup and Seongsan-eup Udo in Jeju City, protesting against the Japanese colonial government's exploitation policies and discrimination. The movement was led by the Haenyeo (women divers) of Jeju.

The Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement is significant because it was led by women.
To commemorate their noble spirit, the Jeju Anti-Japanese Movement Memorial Tower was built on the site of the anti-Japanese movement's assembly point.
Right next to it is the Haenyeo Museum, where you can learn everything about Jeju's Haenyeo culture.

Here, you can also see detailed exhibits about the Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement.

Enjoy a meaningful and pleasant Jeju trip by visiting the memorial tower, the Haenyeo museum and the beautiful Sehwa Beach right next to the memorial.
