Enjoying a trip to Hapdeok starting from Hapdeok Station in Dangjin.

As autumn deepens, and with the weather forecast predicting snow after the onset of winter (Ip Dong), winter is not far away. Yet, this is a wonderful season for travel. With clear days and temperatures not too low, it's the perfect time to travel.

Dangjin City's Hapdeok-eup is a great place to visit by train, a popular means of public transportation. Previously, Dangjin City was not accessible by train, but the Seohae Line and Seohae Circulation Line (Asan Bay Circulation Railway) were opened simultaneously on November 2, 2024.

The opening of Hapdeok Station greatly helps those traveling without a car, relying on public transportation. It's a great place for walkers to explore the surrounding area. Arriving at Hapdeok Station by train marks the beginning of your Hapdeok trip.

Hapdeok Station is located in Hapdeok-eup, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, and the Seohae Line and Circulation Line are serviced by ITX-Maum trains. The Seohae Line heads northbound from Hongseong, connecting to Hapdeok, Inju, Anjung, Hyangnam, Hwaseong City Hall, and Seohwaseong.

The southbound Seohae Line runs in reverse order: Seohwaseong, Hwaseong City Hall, Hyangnam, Anjung, Inju, Hapdeok, and Hongseong, with Hongseong Station as the final destination.

The Circulation Line heads northbound from Hongseong to Yesan, Asan, Cheonan, Pyeongtaek, Hapdeok, and back to Hongseong. With a train station in Hapdeok-eup, it's convenient to travel by train. Upon exiting the train and entering the waiting room, you'll find a tourist information center where you can get tourist information about Dangjin.

The tourist information center offers tourist maps and brochures introducing various tourist attractions in Dangjin, allowing you to start your trip right there. You can use city buses and taxis for transportation.

City bus fares are 1,600 won for adults (1,500 won with a card), 1,280 won for teenagers (1,030 won with a card), and 800 won (700 won) for children. What about the parking at Hapdeok Station? There are free parking lots in front of and behind the station.

If you come to Hapdeok Station, you can visit nearby tourist attractions. By coordinating your train arrival time with bus departure times, you can travel conveniently by public transportation. Taking a bus from here and getting off at Hapdeok Catholic Church allows you to explore many nearby places.

You can use city buses from here. There is a route from Hapdeok Station to Dangjin Terminal, which operates every hour. City buses also run from Hapdeok Station to Solmoe Holy Ground and Sinri Holy Ground.

Buses to Sinri Holy Ground depart at 10:55 AM, 1:55 PM, 3:55 PM, and 4:55 PM, while buses to Solmoe Holy Ground depart at 11:20 AM, 2:20 PM, 4:20 PM, and 5:20 PM. Please note that times may vary by 5 to 10 minutes depending on road conditions.

If you start on foot, it takes about 15 minutes to walk from Hapdeok Station to Hapdeok Catholic Church. Starting from Hapdeok Catholic Church, you can spend several hours exploring the Hapdeok Irrigation and Folk Museum, Hapdeok Rural Theme Park, and Hapdeok Reservoir.

When you go to Hapdeok Catholic Church, you can see the church building standing on a hill from the entrance. Hapdeok Catholic Church was newly built in 1929. The architectural style is rare in Korea, built with a brick and wood structure.

A distinctive feature of Hapdeok Catholic Church is its twin bell towers. Father Perrin, who was in charge of the design at the time, was kidnapped during the Korean War, and only his artifacts are buried in his tomb on the church grounds, which is very unfortunate.

There are bell towers here, and the softly ringing sound is pleasant to hear.

If you go down the stairs from Hapdeok Catholic Church, you will be connected to Hapdeok Rural Theme Park. Here, rural thatched houses are recreated, and inventions that our ancestors invented to measure quantity or time are recreated and exhibited.

Jagyeokru (water clock), Punggi-dae (wind vane), Cheugugi (rain gauge), Angbuilgu (sundial), and Honcheonui (armillary sphere) are proudly in place, which I think will have a high educational effect. You can see the appearance of scarecrows, and you can also see sculptures of farmers plowing fields with plows, which is friendly.

These days, you can see beautiful chrysanthemums blooming in the chrysanthemum fields here.

If you go to Hapdeokje from here, there is a parking lot and a building there, which is the Hapdeok Irrigation and Folk Museum. Hapdeokje was designated as a World Irrigation Facility Heritage Site, and historically, Hapdeokje was one of the three major reservoirs of the Joseon Dynasty, along with Gimje Byeokgolje and Hwanghae-do Yeonannamdaeji.

If you go to the Hapdeok Irrigation and Folk Museum, you can find detailed information about the history of Hapdeokje. Here, the method of constructing Hapdeokje is recreated in miniature, allowing you to imagine the appearance at the time of construction.

You can also examine the process of construction and the structure inside the embankment when it was constructed.

Hapdeokje is visible from here. Hapdeokje, which is presumed to have been built before the Goryeo Dynasty, is currently used as farmland, and only the embankment used for water storage remains in its original form, and the embankment is characterized by its curved shape.

In winter, migratory birds such as swans flock to Hapdeokje to spend the winter and fly away in March, and in summer, lotus flowers and water lilies bloom, showing a beautiful appearance. Currently, the Hapdeokje Four Seasons Theme Park is under construction here, so you can look around carefully.

A trip starting from Hapdeok Station this fall is also great.
