Hososa Yeollyeogak in Goesan
If Namwon has Chunhyang and Yi Mong-ryong, Goesan has Hososa, the wife of Yi Geun-rip. While some loves are tragically unfulfilled, there are also sorrowful loves that are completed through devotion, culminating in a farewell to the world for the sake of one's beloved.
The story of Yi Geun-rip's wife, Hososa, is a tragic love story that, even in 2025, embodies a profound and perhaps difficult-to-fathom devotion.
Located in a quiet rural village, this is a sublime love story that blossomed during the turbulent times of the Byeongja Horan (Second Manchu invasion) in the Joseon Dynasty under King Injo.
A Yeollyeogak is a pavilion erected to commemorate the virtuous conduct of a woman, a form of honoring chastity in the late Joseon period. In a society that valued honor like Joseon, the court's granting of a pavilion to a family for a woman's virtuous deeds was as significant as passing the civil service examination, which is why these sites are designated and preserved as cultural heritage even today.
Baekcheon Ho-ssi (Hososa), the wife of Yi Geun-rip, felt an ominous premonition when her husband left for Ganghwado to transport military provisions during the Byeongja Horan. She marked his clothes with a sign only she would recognize.
Upon hearing the news that Namhansanseong Fortress and Ganghwado had fallen, she walked hundreds of miles to Ganghwado without hesitation. After searching for her husband's remains for a long time, she finally found his body and brought it back home.
Despite the long distance, she personally carried her husband's body back to their home and held a funeral so that he could rest in peace.
She mourned endlessly at her husband's grave, longing for him. Eventually, she ended her short life in this world and departed to be with her beloved husband in the afterlife.
Her heartbreaking love story brought great sorrow and respect to the villagers. This poignant tale spread from the mouths of the villagers all the way to the royal court.
The government officials, to honor her loyalty, built a memorial pavilion at the entrance of the village and buried them together, hoping they would be happy together in the afterlife.
The Hososa Yeollyeogak of Yi Geun-rip's wife has a simple structure with a gabled roof, consisting of one kan (a unit of measurement referring to the space between two columns) in the front and one kan on the side. A signboard commemorating her is hung there. Right next to it, a large, old tree stands as if to remember her unwavering love for her husband.
Next to this cultural heritage site of love and loyalty in Goesan's history is the Haengchon-ri Village Hall in Yeonpung-myeon.
The village hall serves as a resting place for the elderly and has a small exercise area. The village hall, operating alongside the Yeollyeogak, creates a unique scene and has become the pride of the villagers.
If you are curious about the heartbreaking love story created by the Byeongja Horan,
