A Refreshing Summer Retreat in Jeungpyeong
A place where the freshness of summer and the beauty of traditional Hanok come alive.
I recently visited Jeungpyeong in Chungbuk for a healing trip.
I've been there twice to see the lush greenery and beautiful lotus flowers.
During my visit on July 12, I noticed only a few lotus buds, so I was curious to see them in full bloom and returned on July 21.
The lotus flowers were in full bloom, creating a stunning sight.
1. The Lotus Flowers of Jeungpyeong Folk Museum, Embracing the Green Summer
As soon as I entered the village, I was greeted by the grandeur of a 300-year-old Zelkova tree and the lovely sight of white and pink lotus flowers swaying in the breeze.
The lotus pond, shaded by lush leaves, was filled with pristine white lotuses.
During my last visit, the flowers were just buds, but now they had bloomed beautifully.
Some flowers had already wilted, giving way to lotus seeds.
Near the white lotus pond, there's a quaint pavilion where you can take a break.
Across from the white lotuses, pink lotus flowers were also blooming beautifully.
A wooden deck is set up here for a charming viewing experience, making it a great spot for memorable photos.
There are also statues of the twelve zodiac animals, allowing families to find their zodiac signs and enjoy a fun time learning about their characteristics.
This year, fewer pink lotuses bloomed than expected, with many blooming nicely only in the pond by the Zelkova tree.
Take a stroll along the walking path around the lotus pond and capture life's special moments this summer!
2. A Sensory Delight with Folk Experiences and Special Exhibitions
After enjoying the lotus flowers and feeling the heat rising, head inside to the Dure Hall of the museum.
You can participate in various folk experience programs that will enrich your visit.
Located at the center of the Jeungpyeong Folk Experience Museum, Dure Hall showcases instruments used in Jeungpyeong's traditional Jangdeul Dure play and offers a glimpse into traditional agricultural culture.
I tried playing the Janggu (a traditional drum) and the Buk (a barrel drum), and it really lifted my spirits!
I even got to spin a spinning wheel used for weaving, which made me feel like I had traveled back in time.
Behind Dure Hall, you'll find a special exhibition hall on the left.
This space features not only the history and culture of Jeungpyeong but also various themed exhibitions.
Currently, there is an exhibition titled 'Blooming Wishes Carved in Stone Buddhas.'
It showcases beautiful lotus flowers made of paper, representing the paradise through the traditional paper flower art of Gyeonggi Province.
The exhibition also provides ASMR videos of the lotus-making process, creating a unique experience.
The exhibition runs until August 9, 2026, so visiting before then would be a great idea.
Directly across the exhibition hall, you can see intricate paintings of the Buddhist paradise created by masters of traditional Korean painting.
This exhibition showcases the history of Jeungpyeong, a strategic location during the Three Kingdoms period, and features 3D scans of local stone Buddhas.
It's an exhibition that beautifully combines the stone Buddhas of Jeungpyeong, which hold a millennium of history, with the Buddhist art of intangible heritage masters.
On Sunday, July 12, when I visited, there was a cooking experience where participants were making cherry tomato chive kimchi and delicious mushroom porridge.
A friendly visitor offered me a taste, and it was truly delicious!
They hold classes once a month, so inquire about the next cooking experience.
Additionally, there are workshops for blacksmithing and spaces to experience traditional tea ceremonies and ancestral food culture through the senses.
As someone who loves flowers, I had a wonderful time enjoying the lotus flowers and immersing myself in the world of art at the special exhibition.
This trip was a sensory delight with cooking experiences and traditional music performances.
The Jeungpyeong Folk Experience Museum offers a variety of experiences and healing walks, making it a perfect summer destination for families.
