A Gourmet Getaway in Mungyeong: Exploring Jeomchon Jumpang-gil and Mungyeong Yakdol Pig

Discover the enchanting Mungyeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do, a destination where natural landscapes and traditional culture harmoniously blend. Recently, I explored Mungyeong, focusing on Jeomchon Jumpang-gil, an emerging attraction in the old downtown area of Jeomchon.
Jeomchon Jumpang-gil is home to unique shops that have preserved the distinct flavors and charms of Jeomchon, making it an ideal spot for a family trip. During this visit, I experienced a gourmet tour, exploring the eateries, cafes, and diverse shops along Jeomchon Jumpang-gil.
1. Introduction to Jeomchon Jumpang-gil
Jeomchon Jumpang-gil in Mungyeong is a street created as part of a project to revitalize the commercial district of Mungyeong City. It includes Mungyeong Central Market, Jeomchon Station Market, and Happiness Shopping Street.
I participated in a workshop organized by the Mungyeong City Revitalization Foundation last Saturday morning. This area is not just a street of shops; it also plays a role in boosting the local economy and serving as a tourist attraction. With free local buses available, it's easy for tourists to visit. The map shows that everything is located nearby, making it perfect for a walking gourmet tour.
2. Mungyeong Yakdol Pig Gungmul Duruchigi
The highlight of my trip to Mungyeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do was, of course, the food tour. When you think of 'Mungyeong,' you can't leave out 'Yakdol Pig'. This Yakdol Pig is used to create a Gungmul Duruchigi (stew-like dish) menu, which can be enjoyed at specific restaurants. So, I decided to try it for lunch.
We visited 'Kimgane Seafood Noodle'. The interior was clean and pleasant, creating a comfortable dining atmosphere.
Mungyeong Yakdol Pig Gungmul Duruchigi
Medium: ₩27,000 / Large: ₩40,000 (Rice not included)
We ordered the medium size for two people and were surprised by the generous portion. Two types of kimchi are served as side dishes. Although the recipe is the same, each restaurant uses slightly different ingredients, and this place includes sujebi (hand-pulled dough).

The moment the sizzling pork and spicy sauce filled the air, I scooped up a spoonful. I usually can't handle spicy food well, but this Mungyeong Yakdol Pig Gungmul Duruchigi wasn't too intense, which suited my taste. Above all, it used Mungyeong's specialty, Yakdol Pig, so there was no unpleasant smell, and it was both chewy and tender. Because it's served in a stew-like style, it's even more flavorful when eaten with rice.
3. Gourmet Tour Course
The entire Jeomchon Jumpang-gil in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, felt like a 'gourmet tour' course. This is how I planned my day:
After a hearty meal of Mungyeong Yakdol Pig Gungmul Duruchigi, I visited a chicken gangjeong (sweet and sour chicken) place called 'Dak Ggochi for You' for a snack.
Shrimp-Embraced Chicken (₩24,900)
Set: 400g chicken + 15 shrimp
Here, I ordered 'Shrimp-Embraced Chicken' with omija (magnolia berry) sauce. The spicy and sweet sauce harmonized well with the ingredients and was a real treat. The omija in the sauce added a tangy flavor, making it a good choice for both a snack with drinks and a meal.

Next, I stopped by Solbeige. This place is famous for its red bean shaved ice and sweet red bean latte, using red beans produced in Mungyeong. It's also a Blue Ribbon-certified cafe, and it's fun to browse the vintage props.
With two floors and a large space, the atmosphere is cozy, and it's a great place to take pictures. The signature sweet red bean latte is sweet and nutty, making it a great way to take a sweet break during your trip.
For a dessert gift, I chose 'Samil Bakery', a local bakery in Mungyeong. This place is popular for its omija rice castella, which has a wonderful omija fragrance. It was special to enjoy omija, which is what comes to mind when you think of Mungyeong, in a unique way. The packaging is pretty, making it a good gift.
Visiting these various stores in order wasn't just a trip to eat and walk around, but rather a gourmet tour in the alleyways. Each shop had its own personality and story, making it enjoyable to experience them one by one.

4. Must-Visit Places in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do
The course I visited this time in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, was attractive because I could feel both old memories and new sensibilities at the same time. It was a time to feel small but happy, from looking around the traditional market to eating delicious food. This course is recommended for those who like gourmet trips, those who like to take pictures, and those who want a small alley trip.
