On May 30th, I visited Haemi Fortress in Seosan, where the early summer sun was shining brightly. It was a weekend, and many people had come to the fortress.

Families with children, elderly group travelers, and friends out for a stroll filled the spacious grounds, each enjoying their day in their own way.

Haemi Fortress is a historical site that showcases the life and history of the Joseon Dynasty. Built to protect the people from Japanese pirates, it served as a military stronghold during the early Joseon period. The fortress walls stretch approximately 1,800 meters and rise about 5 meters high.

While it feels like a spacious park with wide lawns and walking paths today, people once lived within these walls. The fortress housed various public institutions, including a government office, a post office, and schools.

Haemi Fortress is also linked to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who served here as a military officer for about ten months in 1579. Walking through the fortress felt more special knowing I was treading the same grounds as this legendary figure.

Perhaps that's why there was an archery range within the fortress. Archery was not just a pastime for people of the past; it was an important cultural practice that trained both body and mind. Watching the archers draw their bows enhanced the historical atmosphere of Haemi Fortress.

That day, a traditional music performance was taking place within the fortress. Elderly visitors settled in to enjoy the lively stage, and the traditional melodies harmonized beautifully with the historic ambiance of the fortress.

I made my way toward a flower garden bursting with blooms while listening to the cheerful sounds from the performance area. The bright red climbing roses formed a tunnel among the green scenery, making it impossible to pass by without stopping. The roses in full bloom under the warm sun added a vibrant touch to the serene landscape of Haemi Fortress.

Another highlight of Haemi Fortress is kite flying. It is famous for hosting national kite flying competitions, and on this day, colorful kites soared high in the blue sky. The sight of kites of various colors and shapes dancing in the wind was refreshing and uplifting.

While the sky was clear and blue, the weather was quite hot. Fortunately, I found a shady spot under a tree, which quickly made me feel comfortable. A gentle breeze helped cool off the heat.

Haemi Fortress is an ideal place for relaxation, especially for families with children. The expansive lawn allows kids to play freely while adults can unwind in the shade and enjoy the scenery.

This place is perfect for studying history, taking a leisurely stroll, or simply relaxing. My visit to Haemi Fortress was indeed a great escape.

As May comes to a close, visiting Haemi Fortress offers a chance to connect with history while enjoying nature. It's a space that invites you to walk slowly and reflect on the past.

Haemi Fortress is a meaningful place, especially in June, as we remember those who dedicated themselves to our nation.
