A Cozy Winter Getaway to Sanbang Hwandam in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do

My trip to Hwacheon, Gangwon-do, in December marked the beginning of winter!
This time, I'm sharing my story about visiting Sanbang Hwandam, a 감성 (gamseong - emotional/sensory) campsite where you can fully experience the romance of winter.
It's a camping paradise where you can truly enjoy winter surrounded by nature. I savored delicious wild vegetable and soybean focaccia bread with wild grape jam, and had a fulfilling time with carefully prepared medicinal herb chicken soup (samgyetang) and aster scaber (chwinamul) rice.
The homemade jam made from hand-picked wild grapes was exceptional on bread. Perhaps because it's not something you can easily find, it tasted even more delicious. And enjoying it with wild vegetable and soybean focaccia was simply indescribable.

Sanbang Hwandam
Address: 458-48 Gahwa-ro, Sanae-myeon, Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon-do
Important: Phone reservation is required before visiting.
This food felt even more precious because it's not available anytime. You must make a reservation by phone to taste this dish. The rich, deep broth and the melt-in-your-mouth chicken, along with homemade kimchi and freshly made aster scaber rice, were a delicacy. I can confidently say this is a dish you must try.
Surrounding Scenery
If you follow the somewhat steep road, you'll find a campsite where you can fully experience the ambiance of the forest. The building at the entrance serves as the management office, restaurant, and store. The traces of time gave it a cozy feeling.
This is the management building, bearing the touch of the owners. Today, I'll have brunch and a meal here. I made a reservation in advance and arrived on time, and the owners greeted me warmly.
Forest Trail Walk
While the food was being prepared, I took a walk along the forest path. Even the scent of the forest was wonderful. Following the path filled with pine needles, there were many places to rest.
I saw a deck in the middle. From here, it was the campsite. The feeling of walking on rustling leaves was also very nice. Because it was winter, the campsite was a bit quiet.
Walking along the path, I saw a forest library. It was a space where you could rest and read books. I heard a sound from above, and when I went up, I saw people camping.
It turned out they were regular campers at Sanbang Hwandam. They said they come often because they love it here. I asked for a photo and they kindly agreed.
Wild Vegetable and Soybean Focaccia & Wild Grape Jam
When I came down from the walk, the table was set. Wild vegetable and soybean focaccia and wild grape jam were prepared. I was so curious about the taste that I rushed them to take pictures quickly. The savory smell of the bread was irresistible.
They also have wild grape jam and wild grape syrup, which are their signature products. They were selling them at a reasonable price of 10,000 won per bottle. I decided to taste them first and buy a bottle if they were delicious.
They even prepared soft bread and milk. And they prepared a drink with wild grape syrup for me to taste.
They also gave me a cup of tea made from herbs they picked themselves. It wasn't too strong, but it was perfect for warming up my cold body. I actually preferred the mild and subtle taste.
Greedy 까칠갱이 (Kkachilgaeng-i - a playful nickname)!!
I spread a generous amount of jam on the bread and tried it, and it was more delicious than I expected. It was a different level from common strawberry jam. It wasn't too sweet, but had a moderately sweet and refreshing taste. In the end, I couldn't decide between the wild grape jam and the wild grape syrup, so I bought both.
Medicinal Herb Chicken Soup (Samgyetang) & Aster Scaber Rice
Medicinal herb chicken soup and aster scaber rice that you can only eat with a reservation!! I was surprised at how delicious the rice itself was. And the kimchi and young radish kimchi buried in earthen jars were fantastic side dishes.
The visual of the samgyetang, filled with various medicinal herbs, looks healthy, right? The kimchi, which you have to cut the head off and tear with your hands, had a deep taste that matched its aged flavor.
The combination of chicken and kimchi on top of the aster scaber-scented rice was so amazing that you wouldn't know if you died while eating it. Even without fancy settings, a beautiful table, or lighting, it was a delicious and happy meal.
Review
I had a warm and cozy time at Sanbang Hwandam, a great place to visit in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do, with its fresh air and clean water.
I especially liked that I felt like I was treated to a healthy meal, which made me feel recharged. The kindness of the friendly owners was greater and warmer than anything else. It was a time filled with warmth that I couldn't feel in Seoul. Perhaps the regulars who visit this place love it even more because they know this feeling.
If you're looking for a place to go during winter vacation!!!
It might be a good idea to spend a day in winter at Sanbang Hwandam, which is full of warm hospitality.
