Looking for a perfect summer getaway in Korea? This 2-night, 3-day itinerary through Gangneung and Yangyang offers a refreshing escape from the city with stunning coastal views, engaging indoor activities, and must-visit cultural spots. Let’s dive in!
Places to visit in Gangneung and Yangyang – Indoor activities
Lately, with the scorching summer heat in full swing, I’d like to introduce a 2 nights 3 days domestic travel destination where you can enjoy the cool sea and leisurely natural scenery. That place is Gangneung and Yangyang in Gangwon-do.
From a coastal drive along the blue East Sea, to surfing in the sea breeze, to relaxing in indoor exhibition halls — it’s a course where you can enjoy both scenery and indoor activities. If you’re planning a 2 nights 3 days trip to Gangwon-do, this could be a good reference. In fact, combining the attractions of both regions would easily give you over 30 places to visit, but considering realistic time, travel routes, and stamina, I’ve organized it into around 15 recommended spots.
1. Places to visit in Gangneung
???? Sacheonjin Beach
???? Haslla Art World
???? Arte Museum
???? Anmok Beach
???? Wolhwa Street
???? Gangneung Jungang Market
<Sacheonjin Beach> The first stop of this 2-night, 3-day domestic trip begins in Gangneung. The first destination is Sacheonjin Beach. It’s a calm and quiet beach with clear blue water, and there are rainbow-colored breakwaters and observation facilities that overlook the surrounding scenery. It’s a good spot for taking pretty photos even during a short 10–15 minute visit, so I recommend it.
<Haslla Art World> A recommended indoor destination in Gangneung. It features a sculpture park set against the sea and an indoor art museum, offering a wide variety of sights. There are many stylish photo spots where nature and art harmonize.
<Arte Museum> A media art immersive exhibition in a cool indoor space, making it a good place to avoid the heat. You can experience grand and beautiful visual media. If you're looking for unique indoor activities in Gangneung, it’s worth a visit. Nearby are Gyeongpo Lake and an aquarium, so if time allows, you can also stop by them. Or you could visit the aquarium instead of the Arte Museum.
<Anmok Beach> Famous for its coffee street, there are many large cafes where you can enjoy ocean views. If you visit in the afternoon, the sunlight allows you to capture the blue sea and sky in one frame. It’s not a must-visit, but still worth checking out. Alternatively, you could visit well-known cafes like Terarosa Coffee Factory or Park Yi-chu Coffee.
<Wolhwa Street> Located right next to the central market, this street has beautiful landscaping and is pleasant for a walk. There are photo zones and lots of cute accessory shops along the way — great for browsing.
<Jungang Market> You can wrap up the first day of your 2-night, 3-day Gangwon-do trip at Jungang Market. You’ll find a variety of foods like Gangwon’s traditional dishes such as sweet-and-spicy chicken (dakgangjeong), sussubukkumi (glutinous rice pancakes), as well as fresh seafood like crab and sashimi.
Transfer from Gangneung to Yangyang
???? Sacheonjin Beach
???? Adele Rock
???? Mulchi Beach
???? Yangyang Surfing
???? Buchae Rock + Jukdo Observatory
<Sacheonjin Beach> After visiting the must-see spots in Gangneung on day one, the second day of this 2-night, 3-day trip involves moving from Gangneung to Yangyang. Along the coastal road of the East Sea, you’ll encounter places like Sacheonjin Beach or the filming site of the drama "Goblin." These are great for short photo stops of about 10–15 minutes.
<Adele Rock> The final spot in Gangneung before entering Yangyang is Adele Rock, located at the border. It features natural rock formations carved by waves. The scenery is impressive, and because the area is relatively flat, it’s easy to access even in the summer heat — a quick and worthwhile stop.
<Surfing Experience> If you tour the surrounding areas in the morning and move along, you’ll likely arrive in Yangyang by around 1–2 p.m. If you want a more active experience in your 2-night, 3-day trip, you might consider booking a surfing lesson in advance. Yangyang is Korea’s surfing mecca, with courses for beginners and intermediate surfers. There are various beaches like Jukdo and Ingu offering lessons, so you can choose based on your preference.
<Buchae Rock & Jukdo Observatory> After the surfing experience, if you have remaining time and energy, consider visiting Buchae Rock, a spot famous for its scenic views in Yangyang. Located near Jukdo Beach, you can walk along a trail to the Jukdo Observatory, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area.
If you skip surfing and have more time on day two, you can consider visiting Naksansa Temple or the Osan-ri Prehistoric Museum for indoor activities.
3. Places to visit in Yangyang
???? Hyuhyuam Temple
???? Namdaecheon
???? Hajodae
???? Yangyang Market (5-day market)
<Hyuhyuam Temple> On the last day of the 2-night, 3-day trip, lightly go over the remaining places in Yangyang before heading back home. First up is Hyuhyuam, a temple located by the sea with beautiful scenery. You can even walk down from the temple to the seaside for more things to see.
<Namdaecheon Ecological Park> Located at the lower end of Namdaecheon, which is famous for salmon swimming upstream. In summer, the surrounding reed fields along the walking path turn lush green. The combination of the blue stream and dense greenery gives a different kind of emotion than viewing the sea or mountains. Personally, I think this is the most beautiful natural attraction in Yangyang during summer.
<Hajodae> Ranked fifth among the eight scenic spots of Yangyang, this coastal area is filled with huge rock formations and dense pine forests. From the Hajodae Observatory, you can enjoy a full view of the surrounding beaches and mountains.
<Yangyang Market> End the itinerary by experiencing the local atmosphere at this traditional market. Even on regular days, it’s worth a look, but on 5-day market days, it’s packed with local produce, regional delicacies, and various foods — a fun way to wrap up the trip.
Through this itinerary, I’ve introduced the domestic destinations of Gangneung and Yangyang that you can enjoy within a short time. If you’re looking for a refreshing summer destination away from the city, where you can enjoy nature and escape the heat, I think this route would be a great choice.
