Hiking Jeju Olle Trail 7-1 and a Clean Olle Mission

Walking the Jeju Olle Trail is always a spiritual journey, but my recent hike on Course 7-1 held a special dual purpose. I set out to find a cherished hiking hat I had lost previously while simultaneously participating in the Clean Olle mission to help preserve the natural beauty of the island.
This course takes you through some of Seogwipo's most breathtaking landscapes, from the volcanic peaks of Gogeunsan Mountain (고근산) to the unique rice paddies of Hanon Crater. It is a route filled with floral scents, artistic murals, and a profound sense of accomplishment that comes with protecting the environment.
The Ascent to Gogeunsan Mountain
The journey began with the delicate scent of Korean Clematis flowers wafting through the air. As I ascended, the Jeju World Cup Stadium came into view, framed by the sparkling blue waters of Seogwipo. The path is well-maintained, offering a gentle climb that rewards hikers with expansive coastal vistas.
Upon reaching the summit of Gogeunsan Mountain, I was greeted by a majestic sight: Hallasan Mountain appearing in the distance. The peak of Baekrokdam was partially hidden by clouds, looking much like it was wearing a soft white hat. Walking along the summit trail allows for a 360-degree appreciation of Jeju's unique topography.
Discovering Local Gems: Seogwipo Fore Cafe
While following the trail, I encountered Seogwipo Fore, a beautiful garden and cafe that has been nurtured for eight years. The passion of the family running it—a father tending the garden while his children manage the cafe—is evident in every corner. It feels like a hidden sanctuary that is destined to become a popular landmark for Olle hikers.
Cultural Landscapes: Murals and Hanon Crater
As the trail continues, the scenery shifts from natural forests to vibrant local art. A striking trumpet creeper mural caught my eye, its colors burning as bright as the summer sun. This area leads toward the Hanon Bongnimsa Temple, where the citrus trees are already beginning to show their yellow hues, signaling the change of seasons.
Hanon Crater is perhaps the most unique section of this course. It is the only place on Jeju Island where rice is cultivated. Seeing the green fields within the massive volcanic crater is a reminder of the islanders' resilience and harmony with nature. I can only imagine the stunning golden waves this crater will produce come autumn.
Completing the Clean Olle Mission
Passing through Geolmae Ecological Park, I finally reached the Jeju Olle Tourist Center. This point marks the intersection of several courses and serves as the final destination for my Clean Olle mission. While I didn't find my lost hat, the act of cleaning the trail provided a different kind of fulfillment.
A Reward for the Soul and the Environment
The culmination of the hike was receiving the Clean Olle completion certificate and medal. Holding the medal in my hand, I felt a deeper sense of responsibility toward the preservation of Jeju's trails. It turns a simple walk into a meaningful contribution to the community and the planet.
Hiking with a purpose makes every step more engaging. Have you ever tried a "plogging" or "clean hike" mission during your travels? If you're visiting Seogwipo soon, would you consider participating in the Clean Olle program to leave the island better than you found it? Let's discuss your favorite eco-friendly travel tips!
