Yuhan-Kimberly Green Camp 2025: A Summer Activity Review

Hello!
I thought it would be nice to share my experiences from my summer activities. So, here's a review of my time at the Yuhan-Kimberly 2025 Green Camp!
I've organized my preparations for the activities in chronological order. I hope this will be helpful for students in my department or anyone interested in participating in the Yuhan-Kimberly Green Camp next year!
1. Activity Preparation (June 22 - June 28)
I'm a sophomore in the Department of Environmental Systems Engineering, and I have a strong interest in environmental issues. So, I looked for environmental extracurricular activities to do during the summer using apps like Sseuksak and Linkareer!
I focused on finding environmental activities related to my major. That's how I discovered Yuhan-Kimberly's Green Camp. The camp's program, which included visiting areas damaged by wildfires and creating my own creative proposals for environmental problems, looked interesting, so I decided to apply!
I had previously applied for the Green Camp last year with Jaeun, Seungmin, and Eunbin, full of the passion of freshmen, but we were rejected.
This year, I worked with Eunbyeol, Yuna, and Haein to create and submit a self-introduction and proposal that improved on last year's application by including:
In-depth analysis of environmental issues and Realistic solutions.
Preparing the activity proposal and self-introduction coincided with the summer semester, so I prepared diligently, attending tight classes and studying while also holding various meetings with my peers in study rooms and via Zoom.
We prioritized submitting a proposal containing our own creative solutions over perfecting our self-introductions. Also, since our group majors in Environmental Systems Engineering, we tried to include as much content as possible about the forest restoration process using environmental microorganisms learned in our major courses to create a proposal that reflected our ideas.
2. Acceptance (July 4)
I received the acceptance notification via text message on July 4th after 5 PM!
I got on the phone with Haein after finding out and got super excited!
3. Field Trip (July 28 - 30)
The field trip was the activity I was most looking forward to!
We chose the agenda of restoring forests damaged by wildfires and expanding the importance of wildfire prevention, so I was most excited about seeing the actual wildfire-damaged sites that I had only seen on the news and listening to explanations and lectures from experts.
Before the field trip, we received a notice about the activity plan and what to bring for the field trip during the online orientation!
Day 1
Following the notice given during the pre-online OT, I lightly packed clothes for 2 nights and 3 days, slippers, toiletries, towels, cosmetics, and my iPad in my backpack and wore hiking boots and workout clothes!
Two of our group members gathered at Dongdaegu Station, and the other two gathered at Jamsil Sports Complex, so we went to the meeting points on time.
Bus seats were assigned according to the group order, and each seat had arm sleeves, raincoats, bucket hats, parasols, sandwiches, and coffee prepared by Yuhan-Kimberly, all neatly packed in a Yuhan-Kimberly bag.
We departed for Andong, the first wildfire-damaged area.
On the bus, we had a time to briefly introduce the activities and ourselves! The participants came from diverse departments such as Business Administration, Public Administration, Computer Engineering, Forestry, and Life Science, so I was excited to meet students from various fields!
But we were introverted girls, so we quietly listened to the self-introductions and watched Yuhan-Kimberly's commercials on the bus TV while moving.

Arrived in Andong, Gyeongbuk
Andong is one of the areas that burned due to the wildfire that originated in Uiseong earlier this year.
It was a relatively recent wildfire site that occurred this year, and the forest was still in a state where restoration had not yet begun.
If you look at the third photo, you can see that the trees have no leaves.
We heard an explanation that the trees died from the fire and could not function, so they had no leaves.
After walking up the mountain path a bit, there was a base camp.
They explained in detail the process of finding wildfire areas in wildfire suppression operations using the Forest Disaster Command Headquarters vehicle, the vehicle used for fire prevention work, and the monitoring of the affected areas.
Since the area of the wildfire damage was large, I was able to learn about the system of firefighting operations, such as identifying the damaged area and finding the direction of suppression.
After hearing the explanation at the base camp, I was able to see the trees around the base camp up close.
Looking at the trees damaged by the wildfire this close, I learned that the characteristics of the Andong area were that most of the damaged trees were coniferous trees such as pine trees.
Also, the trees were burned and the leaves did not grow, so the surrounding terrain was dry, and it was hotter because it was directly exposed to sunlight.
I also learned that the trees marked with red dots in the first photo were marked for logging because they were all to be cut down to proceed with the artificial restoration process.
Ferns and other plants were slowly growing and forming the ground on the hot terrain where the trees were burned.
After the Andong field trip, we had a delicious lunch

Baekdudaegan National Arboretum and Lecture
We moved to Baekdudaegan National Arboretum!
Here, we were able to tour the internal exhibition facilities and listen to explanations about the forest restoration process and restoration methods from various experts. There was a lot of new information, so it was interesting!
Team Project Mentoring
Afterwards, we moved to the accommodation, received feedback on our project, and had time to observe insects with Galoa.
While receiving feedback on the project, we received feedback that it would be good to focus on one of the game app, advertisement remake, soil restoration kit, and seedling vending machine ideas that we included in the first project draft.
We were able to determine the direction of activities to prioritize delivering information about wildfire damage.
After that, we had a late-night snack and passed out for the next day.

Day 2
Uljin Field Trip
On the second day, we visited Uljin.
Uljin is a damaged area where the wildfire occurred about 3 years ago.
The restoration process was underway in a way that humans help, considering the restorative power of nature.
Here, the person who gave the explanation explained in detail the characteristics of plant communities that grow immediately after a wildfire and the restoration patterns depending on the location of the mountain on the south and north slopes, which was a time to learn a lot.
Unlike the artificial restoration method of removing all trees for restoration in Uljin, we learned that they are applying a 'slow but regenerative restoration method that considers the regeneration power of nature' by removing only dead trees and planting seedlings as above.

Nature Ring Ecology Experience
After that, we came back and experienced the Baekdudaegan National Arboretum's expert ecological commentary and Nature Ring program to learn about biodiversity!
Perhaps because we were caught sticking together as introverts...
All teams were divided into various fields such as lichens, plants 1/2, and ferns, and we were able to listen to explanations with people from different teams!
I was able to hear explanations about various trees and plants from an expert on the plant team and uploaded it to the Nature Ring program! Through this, I was able to take a closer look at the veins of the leaves, the bark of the trees, and the seeds while looking at the surrounding natural ecosystem!

Lecture and Team Networking
Nam Yuna, fighting~~~
After the experience, we had time to have a lecture by Julian and play team games to build friendships.
It was a fun time to play games while being blinded by various prizes such as Yuhan-Kimberly tissues, wet wipes, Forest sunscreen, and Starbucks gift certificates.
And I was very nervous during the drawing time for the presentation order, but...
8th!!!!!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I succeeded!
God bless to Yuna
After calming my heart, I ate pizza.
I ate even the pizza that my teammates couldn't eat.
Food waste is bad~~

Day 3
East Sea Field Trip
The East Sea was severely devastated due to prolonged arson caused by long-term ignition and dry winds!
Also, this was a place where wildfires had occurred in the past and were restored by planting pine trees, but damage was caused by another wildfire, so they said that they are currently restoring using both forest restoration and artificial restoration.
In order to make the East Sea a tourist destination, they are constructing a 'firebreak forest and mixed forest by planting mixed species of trees such as mountain cherry trees and pine trees'.
Yuhan-Kimberly is also participating in the restoration by holding tree planting activities for newlyweds and various citizen participation tree planting activities here, so it was a time that doubled my pride in participating in this kind of corporate extracurricular activity.

After visiting the East Sea wildfire-damaged area, we had lunch, gave our impressions, and returned to Seoul!
Ate the puffed rice given by Julian
Reason for gaining 3kg: Excellent food every meal
Presentation of participation review!
Pongpongpong
It was a very meaningful time to experience wildfire damage and biodiversity by touring all over the country for 2 nights and 3 days!
Also, while majoring in environmental systems engineering, I learned how to use the environment efficiently, but seeing the environment destroyed made me realize that I should become an environmental systems engineering major who thinks about coexistence between the environment and humans!
Everyone worked hard❤️ Haein, Yuna, Eunbyeol, I love you
The next blog will be about 'Green Camp Festival and Final Project Preparation Process'.
Goodbye
