Walking the Path of Memories: The Im Yeong-ae Road in Paju

Walking the Path of Memories
Im Yeong-ae Road in Paju
Hello, citizens of Paju!
Have you ever felt the breath of history on the familiar streets you walk every day?
Recently, I had a very special and moving journey in the area of Gyoha-dong, Paju, which I often passed by.
I participated in a guided program called 'Gyeonggi Women’s History Exploration - Im Yeong-ae Road' organized by the Gyeonggi Women's Vision Center.
It was not just a simple walk; it was a meaningful time to remember the lives of female independence activists who had long been erased and hidden from our history.
Every alley and tree that I would have passed unnoticed became a living history museum when met with the in-depth explanations from our guide.
Before starting the exploration of Im Yeong-ae Road, the guide shared the historical significance of the area called Paju.
Paju, due to its geographical location bordering the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, is often recognized as a symbol of division and peace.
However, I learned that it has been a solid ground where women’s lives have continuously resisted amid the immense boundaries of state and history, from the Japanese occupation to the Korean War and the US military base era.
At the center of this history is the great female independence activist Im Yeong-ae, who, in March 1919, led hundreds of residents in Gyoha to shout for independence.
Even while pregnant, she was arrested and imprisoned, and after briefly being released to give birth, she returned to the cold solitary confinement of Seodaemun Prison with her newborn.
The Im Yeong-ae Road I explored is a 'Path of Peace' that honors the courage of Im Yeong-ae and the women who boldly resisted against the triple oppression of gender, motherhood, and colonial constraints.
The exploration lasted about 70 minutes, starting from the Gyoha Administrative Welfare Center.
As we visited various significant sites, each step was filled with emotion.
The journey began at the Gyoha Administrative Welfare Center, a historical site symbolizing the fervent independence movement over a century ago.
Arriving at the birthplace of Im Yeong-ae, I felt the breeze differently, realizing it was the place where a woman decided to step into the streets to change the times.
At the Gyoha Elementary School, we saw a wall dedicated to female independence activists, filled with remarkable stories of their struggles.
Finally, we reached the Gyoha Community Center, where we shared our thoughts on the significance of the path we walked.
The journey was not only enlightening but also filled with pride and a sense of solidarity.
Walking the Im Yeong-ae Road allowed us to learn deeply about not only Im Yeong-ae but also other female independence activists who stood in solidarity.
In the face of a male-centered narrative of the independence movement, the labor, care, and relentless struggle for survival of women became evident as a vital pillar of the movement.
Everyone can participate in this free program, so I encourage you to join with your family or friends!
As we conclude our exploration of Im Yeong-ae Road, we reflect on how women have always cared for each other and created stories of connection, making this journey a testament to warm and strong solidarity.
This weekend, why not hold the hands of your loved ones and embark on a journey to meet the hidden histories of women in Paju?
It will surely be a heartwarming journey that stays with you.
