Seoul Opens Yeouido Underground Bunker for Yann Arthus-Bertrand's Photo and Video Exhibition 'Cats & Dogs'

Seoul is opening the Yeouido underground bunker to host the Yann Arthus-Bertrand photo and video exhibition 'Cats & Dogs: THE GREAT CIVILIZATION' from November 21st to May 14th of next year.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is once again opening the Yeouido underground bunker, which has been operating on a limited basis, to the public.
From November 21st to May 14th of next year, the city will host the photo and video exhibition ‘Cats & Dogs: THE GREAT CIVILIZATION’ by Yann Arthus-Bertrand in the Yeouido underground bunker. Yann Arthus-Bertrand, a world-renowned artist best known for ‘Earth from Above,’ will showcase works on the theme of ‘coexistence between humans and companion animals’ in this exhibition.
The Yeouido underground bunker is a facility presumed to have been built during the Cold War era and an underutilized space in the city center that has not been open to the public for decades.
The city first opened the underground bunker in 2015 and operated it as a branch of the Seoul Museum of Art from 2017 until last year. In June of this year, the bunker's potential as a cultural space was confirmed through the global music platform Spotify and K-POP artist ENHYPEN's pop-up event, ‘MAISON ENHYPEN.’
This Yann Arthus-Bertrand exhibition is the second project to establish the Yeouido underground bunker as a full-fledged innovative cultural space and a pre-event prepared ahead of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France next year. EBS and SM EduMedia are co-hosting the event, and admission is available through online advance reservation to create a pleasant and safe viewing environment.
Beyond simple viewing, various programs are operated together, including ‘visitor participation-type content,’ ‘educational programs for children and families,’ ‘special events related to companion animals,’ and ‘photo and video-based citizen community programs.’ Companion animals are allowed to enter with carriers.
Seoul City has confirmed the potential of the Yeouido underground bunker as a cultural space and plans to thoroughly review the overall bunker operation process and expand the operation model based on private cooperation.
In particular, remodeling will be promoted from next year to compensate for the shortcomings of the underground space, maximize the historical and spatial identity of the Yeouido underground bunker, and transform it into a new cultural hub that can be enjoyed by both domestic and foreign tourists and families.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said, “The Yeouido underground bunker will be an experimental attempt by Seoul to return underutilized public spaces to citizens by combining them with high-quality private content, and will become a new public space revitalization model.”
