Vincent van Gogh Meets Contemporary Art: A Special Exhibition at Ulsan Museum of Art

Hello, I am Kim Jong-hee, a reporter for the Ulsan Nuri Blog.
Today, I would like to introduce the exhibition 'Vincent van Gogh Meets Contemporary Art' at the Ulsan Museum of Art.
This exhibition has attracted significant attention as it features the original works of the 'immortal painter' Vincent van Gogh for the first time in Ulsan.
It is a unique opportunity to experience not only Gogh's masterpieces but also various timeless artworks.
The exhibition takes place on the second basement level, in Exhibition Hall 1 of the Ulsan Museum of Art.
The Ulsan Museum of Art, known for its modern and open space, plays an essential role in introducing diverse artworks to the local community.
The exhibition runs from November 27, 2025, to February 8, 2026.
The title of the exhibition suggests a meeting between Van Gogh and contemporary art, focusing on the connections between Gogh's legacy and modern artistic expressions.
This exhibition goes beyond simply showcasing famous works; it explores how Vincent van Gogh's artistic spirit and techniques have influenced contemporary artists.
The exhibition is made possible by Shin Hong-kyu, the director of Shin Gallery, who was born and raised in Ulsan and studied art history and restoration at the University of Delaware.
Since establishing Shin Gallery in Manhattan in 2013, he has been actively involved as a gallery owner and art collector.
During our interview, I found him to be a passionate individual born in 1990, contrary to the typical image of older gallery directors.
His dream of collecting many artworks, including those of Gogh, continues to evolve.
One section of the exhibition is designed as the collector's study, featuring artworks and items displayed in his actual study.
This rare space adds an intriguing element for visitors.
The highlight of the exhibition is undoubtedly Gogh's original oil painting, 'Head of a Peasant' (1885), which is being publicly exhibited in Ulsan for the first time.
This work, created shortly before Gogh established his unique style, reflects his deep affection for the life of farmers, showcasing his powerful brushwork and humanistic struggles.
In addition, over 90 works by renowned global artists from the Shin Hong-kyu collection will be on display, featuring significant figures such as Elaine de Kooning and David Salle.
Works by prominent contemporary Korean artists like Kim Soo-ja and Jung Chang-seop will also be presented, offering a chance to appreciate both the collector's discerning eye and the status of Korean art.
The exhibition opened to many visitors, including individuals, families, and couples, all enjoying their time with the artworks.
Various genres, including painting, installation, and photography, can be experienced throughout Exhibition Hall 1, with many large-scale works that are not often accessible to the public.
Docent Choi Yu-ri provided insightful explanations to enhance the understanding of the artworks, available without reservation at specific times during the week and on weekends.
This exhibition traverses art history from the 18th-century Rococo period to contemporary times, examining the connections between classical and modern art.
It is a rare opportunity to encounter Gogh's originals in Ulsan, inviting everyone to explore the timeless world of art at the Ulsan Museum of Art.
