The Unyang Service Area, located on the Gyeongbu Expressway towards Seoul, captivates visitors with its unique interior design.

The name 'Unyang Service Area' is derived from Unyang-eup, a sub-administrative district in Ulsan's Ulju County.

Originally, there was also a direction towards Busan, but it was closed and replaced by the Tongdosa Service Area.

With the expansion of the Unyang-Yeongcheon section, a rest area was created on the site, and around the same time, a new building for the Seoul direction was constructed.

The service area features restrooms, customer lounges, convenience stores, and restaurants.

Notably, the restrooms are adorned with artwork, setting them apart from typical service area facilities.

In the outdoor section, plastic partitions have been set up for the winter season, providing warmth while purchasing food.

The floor is decorated with whale mosaic tiles, and a sparkling Christmas tree greets visitors at the entrance.

There is also a pet playground outdoors, where dogs over 14 kg are restricted from entering.

Visitors must be cautious when opening and closing the doors to prevent other dogs from escaping.

This service area allows both people and pets to take a break together.

Inside the service area, there is an exhibition featuring the Bangudae Petroglyphs Museum from Uljugun.

The Bangudae Petroglyphs, located on the cliffs of Daegokcheon, a tributary of the Taehwa River, are believed to date back to the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age.

These petroglyphs are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and are the oldest petroglyphs in the Korean Peninsula, depicting whales and human whaling activities.

The petroglyphs include not only whales but also symbols and patterns that are difficult to interpret.

Initially, over 300 images were identified, but many have been lost due to flooding over the past 50 years.

There is also a section dedicated to upcycled plastic products, which transform waste into new, valuable items.

These products are made from upcycled stuffing for marine creature dolls, reflecting an environmentally conscious approach.

A coffee corner operated by a robot is available, where the robot moves periodically, entertaining children who dance along with it.

The restaurant features an underwater theme, including a solo dining area for those who prefer to eat alone.

It offers a unique ambiance for taking great photos, making you feel as if you're dining inside a submarine.

There is also a self-service restaurant in a different building, inspired by a ship's design, complete with a playroom for toddlers.

Facilities for breastfeeding and child care services are provided for children aged 36 months to 7 years.

Visitors can use free blood pressure measurement services and access computers and printers.

The self-service restaurant operates in a way that may be unfamiliar to first-time visitors, allowing you to choose side dishes and pay at the end, minimizing food waste.

Enjoying a delicious meal at the service area is a great way to save time while traveling during the cold winter months.

The Unyang Service Area, with its unique interior inspired by Bangudae Petroglyphs and the underwater world, is a distinctive and impressive stop.

Be sure to visit the Unyang Service Area when passing by!
