Ulsan's Tourism Development: New Opportunities in Jung-gu

Today, I would like to share some significant news regarding tourism in Ulsan.
Ulsan Jung-gu has been selected as a new site for the '2026 Tourism Dure.'
Until now, the tourism initiatives in Ulsan have primarily focused on Dong-gu, Nam-gu, and Ulju-gun. With the inclusion of Jung-gu, the symbolic downtown area, Ulsan's tourism landscape is set to expand further.
What is Tourism Dure?
Tourism Dure is a community-led tourism policy initiative where local residents actively participate in creating lodging, dining, experiential, travel, and content businesses. The core idea is to transform tourists from mere transient visitors into engaged participants who stay, experience, and return.
Jung-gu plans to develop experiential tourism content that intertwines historical, cultural, and tourism resources, focusing on the cultural street of Seongnam-dong, along with local goods and extended stay programs.
Particularly with the upcoming 2028 Ulsan International Garden Expo, Jung-gu's tourism initiatives are likely to gain significant attention.
Currently, there are ten active tourism Dure businesses in Ulsan:
- Mama's Home Cuisine
A healthy Korean cooking class focusing on low-sodium fermented soybean paste and detox kimchi, starting with 'food' as a local healing experience. - Kim's Macaron Factory
Famous for its flatfish macarons, this local dessert experience is suitable for both children and adults. - Suldo Seafood (The Abundant)
A dessert brand using seaweed from haenyeo (female divers), combining tourism with women's employment and local resources. - Urban Tree Co., Ltd.
An eco-friendly experience making souvenirs, pots, and DIY kits from recycled coffee grounds. - Rayhop
A one-day vegan baking class that uses organic and plant-based ingredients, reflecting current trends. - Wanastha
A wellness space for forest yoga and meditation near Daeham Lake, offering a unique healing spot. - The Clear
An environmentally friendly tourism initiative that reduces waste at festivals and events. - Hee-pum
Cultural content based on the Bangudae Petroglyphs, offering goods, puppet shows, and exploration programs. - Cafe GomGom (The Seed)
A local brunch and experience café where visitors can enjoy brunch made from Ulsan's local ingredients. - Cultural Dispatch Office
Unique 'mobile cultural experiences' featuring terrariums of the Bangudae Petroglyphs and reed diffuser experiences.
While previous tourism initiatives in Ulsan focused on nature, environment, and food, Jung-gu's tourism Dure is poised to become an urban tourism initiative based on local culture, alleyways, and historical narratives. Areas like Seongnam-dong, Byeongyeong, Taehwa River, and downtown alleys could transform from mere passageways into engaging tourism stages.
Tourism is no longer just about sights but about storytelling, community preservation, and sustainable living. The selection of Ulsan Jung-gu for tourism Dure is a welcome change, and it will be interesting to see what new resident businesses emerge and how Ulsan's tourism evolves.
