The Origin of the Taehwa River: Baegunsan Tapgol Spring

Origin
- Etymology: Origin + Place (Chinese characters 發源地)
- The place where a phenomenon first occurs
- The starting point of a river or stream
As the new year begins and January approaches mid-month, many of us have special places where we wish for our hopes and dreams.
For several years, I have chosen to visit the Baegunsan Tapgol Spring, the longest source of the Taehwa River, located in Ulsan.
From my home in Nam-gu, Ulsan, I drive for about 40 minutes using the Gyeongbu Expressway and exit at the Hwalcheon IC.
From the IC, I take a winding road to the right into the village for about 20 minutes until I reach the entrance of Tapgol Spring.
After about 10 minutes of driving through the village, I arrive at the community center of Naewa Village in Uljugun, where I need to continue for another 10 minutes on a narrow village road.
Naewa Village is somewhat remote and not far from the city, making transportation relatively convenient, with bus 303 running through.
Continuing up the village road for about 5 minutes, I reach the Seonpil Chapel, which is part of the first course of the Uljug Catholic Pilgrimage Trail, where I meet a fork in the road coming from the mountain.
This path, known as the Gyowoo Village Road, connects to an 8.1 km course that includes Inbo Church, Ha-seonpil Chapel, Sang-seonpil Chapel, Tapgol, and Tapgol Chapel.
Before reaching Baegunsan Tapgol Spring, I encounter the old site of Tapgol Chapel along the Uljug Catholic Pilgrimage Trail.
This space is privately owned by a resident of this village, and I took a moment to greet a senior from Du-gwang Middle School in Uljugun.
After another 5 minutes of walking up the village road, I arrive at the parking lot of Baegunsan Tapgol Spring.
From the entrance, if I go straight up, there is a path leading to the temple called 'Sambaekryuksilsa', and before reaching the temple, I find signs directing me to Baegunsan Tapgol Spring.
Baegunsan Tapgol Spring is 1.2 km away, and the difficulty level is low. It's accessible for people of all ages, though some sections may leave you slightly breathless.
The fourth section of the Taehwa River 100-ri Trail starts from the Gamda Valley and connects to the Seonpil Village intersection. If you're driving, just input the Tapgol Spring parking lot into your navigation system.
In winter, Baegunsan Tapgol Spring is quiet, like the melody of the cold season, yet it represents the vibrant beginnings of nature. As I walk along the forest path, the sound of water flowing through the ice brings a calmness to my heart, reminiscent of a peaceful poem.
The winter scenery here is nature speaking to you in another language.
After about 30 minutes of walking from the parking lot towards Tapgol Spring, I encounter a welcome signpost.
The hiking path to Baegunsan Tapgol Spring isn't particularly steep or rugged, but at this time of year, you inevitably encounter dry leaves. These leaves, which would usually evoke romance, can sometimes confuse you between winter and autumn.
Let's enjoy the romance as we return to our childhood.
Winter Hiking Tips: Be cautious of hidden ice under the leaves or wet rocks that may be slippery. Wearing hiking boots is essential, and using trekking poles can reduce foot fatigue.
Before reaching the source, you can take a moment to rest on a bench.
Near the source, there is a stone tower with a wooden sign that says "Stay Strong".
Only 0.4 km left to the destination. With just a bit more effort, you can experience a moment of meaning.
Along the way to Baegunsan Tapgol Spring, you can also encounter unfamiliar yet endearing wildflowers like Cheonnamseong, Satgatnamul, and others, as you await the spring days when life begins to bloom.
All you need is the leisure to walk slowly, slowly, or differently.
If you see this deck path, you will soon meet Taehwa River's source, Tapgol Spring.
Finally, I have arrived at Baegunsan Tapgol Spring. If you visit on a lush green day, you might recall the times when valley water flowed vigorously here.
Tapgol Spring, located at an altitude of 550m in Baegunsan, is the longest source of the Taehwa River, situated in Naewa-ri, Du-seo-myeon, Uljugun, Ulsan.
The name "Tapgol" comes from a legend that a tower was washed down by a flood, leading to the naming of the lower village.
We are Ulsan residents. Have you ever felt pride in being from Ulsan while traveling or knowing about other regions' sources?
As we take a moment to rest at an altitude, we reflect on the origins of major rivers like the Han River, Nakdong River, and Geum River.
On the first day of the new year, I joined the characters of Ulsan to promote "Fun City Ulsan".
In my car, I have over 20 character friends of various sizes.
Visiting Tapgol Spring for the sunrise, I found snow piled up even in early January.
Life is a record. Let's not take it lightly.
