Southern Gyeonggi's largest art fair featuring 103 galleries from across the country.
A cultural arts festival for everyone, with kids' programs and pet stroller rentals.
Have you heard of an art fair where you can see works from various galleries all in one place? I visited the '2026 Art Fair in Suwon,' which took place at the Suwon Convention Center from June 25 to 28. True to its reputation as a representative art fair of Southern Gyeonggi, the event featured not only a variety of artworks but also numerous experiential programs, making it an enjoyable cultural event for everyone.
The Art Fair showcases diverse works presented by domestic galleries. Unlike typical exhibitions, multiple galleries present their works in one space, allowing visitors to appreciate various genres such as painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking all at once.
This year's '2026 Art Fair in Suwon' featured 103 galleries from across the nation, showcasing high-quality artworks. Visitors could freely enjoy the exhibits, receive explanations from gallery representatives, and even consult about purchasing pieces they liked, making it an event that brought art closer to the public.
In addition to the exhibitions, various accompanying events were organized, including a pre-booked docent program, kids' programs, and a wine & music festival, allowing attendees to enjoy the exhibition more broadly.
Upon entering the exhibition hall, the first thing that caught my eye was its scale. With various gallery booths set up in one space, it felt like visiting multiple exhibitions at once. Each gallery had a unique atmosphere and color scheme, making it enjoyable to explore at a leisurely pace.
While taking photos in front of the artworks, a gallery representative kindly offered to take my picture. Art exhibitions often feel intimidating and quiet, but this small gesture made it much more comfortable to explore the exhibition. It was impressive that even those unfamiliar with art could enjoy the event without feeling burdened.
Another notable aspect was the diverse age groups enjoying the exhibition together. Many families attended with children, and there were services like pet stroller rentals for visitors with pets, ensuring that everyone could comfortably enjoy the exhibition.
The 'Sumunjang Art Fair' started in 2022 as a cultural and artistic marketplace in Suwon. At the 2026 Art Fair, I encountered works from 24 local artists active in Suwon. The theme 'The Third Wave' showcased various representations of waves through the works of artists like Jin-A Gu, Yu-Kyung Kim, and others.
This year's Art Fair was particularly meaningful as it was the largest art fair in Southern Gyeonggi held in Suwon. Typically, events of this scale are found in Seoul, so it was a pleasure to see works from various domestic galleries and local artists from the Gyeonggi region all in one place.
Moreover, the event was not just an exhibition but was linked to the '2026-2027 Suwon Visit Year,' providing opportunities to enjoy the wine & music festival and nearby attractions, making it a notable cultural and tourism experience.
Overall, the Art Fair was more than just an exhibition; it was a celebration where citizens could enjoy cultural arts more closely. Without needing to travel to Seoul, high-quality artworks and diverse pieces from local Gyeonggi artists were accessible, creating a welcoming atmosphere for those who might find art intimidating. If you’ve hesitated to visit exhibitions, starting with an art fair like this could be a great way to ease into it.
