In April, as the cherry blossoms beautifully scattered along the night view of Yocheon Road in Namwon, we asked for your attention towards the upcoming Chunhyang Festival. Finally, the long-awaited 96th Chunhyang Festival has grandly opened yesterday in Gwanghanruwon and the Yocheon area of Namwon, Jeollabuk-do.
This Chunhyang Festival, supported by the Jeollabuk-do Autonomous Province, is a meaningful event that garners interest from both the residents of Jeollabuk-do and the entire nation. As a festival with a long history, we can see the excited expressions of the citizens of Namwon, the residents of Jeollabuk-do, and tourists.
The first day of the event, Thursday, April 30, was relatively quiet as it was the day before the official opening ceremony. Due to the slightly cloudy weather the previous day, we could check the preparation status in a calm atmosphere.
However, today, May 1, the heat of the festival is rising, and the weather is exceptionally clear and sunny compared to yesterday. There seems to be no better day to enjoy the beauty and culture of Namwon under the warm spring sunshine.
Namwon's Pride: The Global Chunhyang Selection Contest
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the Global Chunhyang Selection Contest held on the special stage next to Gwanghanruwon. Within the larger framework of the Chunhyang Festival, this contest symbolizes the identity and traditional beauty of Namwon.
This contest, which has been passed down from the past, holds a deep meaning beyond merely competing for external beauty; it modernly inherits Chunhyang's integrity and spirit.
Known overseas, Chunhyang candidates have come from Canada and have been selected as global ambassadors.
Personally, I have a special interest in this contest because someone I know was selected as Miss Chunhyang in the past. Particularly this year, in line with the goal of becoming a global event, the contest name has been elevated, transforming it into an international festival where talents from around the world participate.
It was impressive to see numerous participants showcasing their charms on stage, promoting the beauty of Namwon to the world.
Miss Chunhyang
This year, the honor of Miss Chunhyang was awarded to Kim Ha-yeon, a student at Hanyang University from Paju, Gyeonggi-do. She expressed her ambitious desire to serve as an ambassador promoting Namwon's cultural assets and connecting the citizens of Namwon with tourists.
Various Ways to Enjoy the Chunhyang Festival
This festival is meticulously organized to allow visitors to fully experience the charm of Namwon. Based on four themes: elegance, determination, love, and tradition, diverse performances and experiences are taking place throughout Gwanghanruwon and Yocheon.
Seeing the bright smiles of visitors dressed in traditional hanbok walking the streets makes me feel that this is indeed a living historical site.
Every evening, performances featuring top domestic artists such as Baek Ji-young, Kim Junsu, Kim Taewoo, and Song Ha-ye are scheduled on the special stage and main stage, promising to beautifully decorate the festival nights. Additionally, fireworks are planned for 10 PM on May 1 and the final day, May 6.
Facilities for family visitors, such as spaces for children to play and an outdoor library, are well-prepared, ensuring that everyone can comfortably enjoy the festival. The night market along the Yocheon offers delicious local food from Namwon, providing a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
As many visitors flock from all over the country, transportation convenience has been carefully checked. Shuttle buses connecting Namwon Station and major points run frequently every 15-20 minutes, making it easy for those using public transport to reach the event venue.
Additionally, there are ample public and temporary parking lots around the venue, allowing those visiting by car to enjoy the festival without significant inconvenience.
