The 2nd Korean UNESCO Heritage Recording Project: A Thousand Cameras (Yeongdong, Gangwon Province)

The 2nd exhibition of 'A Thousand Cameras,' a social contribution project organized by Fujifilm Korea and planned and mentored by World Press Photo Award-winning photographer Sung Nam-hun, will be held. This exhibition showcases the results of recording UNESCO heritage sites in the Yeongdong area of Gangwon Province through the eyes of citizen photographers.
This project deeply documents the history and scenery of ancient temples like Naksansa Temple and Geonbongsa Temple, part of the 'Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea' designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. It also captures the intergenerational transmission process of the Gangneung Danoje Festival, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, encompassing rituals, performances, and games, as well as the modern succession of traditional farmers' music.
In particular, the project captures the stunning scenery of the Gwandong Palgyeong (Eight Views of Gwandong), which has inspired artists since the Joseon Dynasty, with a fresh perspective. It comprehensively records the region's unique natural and cultural complex heritage, including modern reinterpretations of famous spots along the East Sea such as Gyeongpodae in Gangneung, Naksansa Temple in Yangyang, and Cheongganjeong Pavilion in Goseong, as well as the DMZ ecosystem, East Sea fishing village culture, Jeongseon Arirang, and cultural regeneration of abandoned mines.
Fifteen citizen photographers active mainly in the Gangwon region participated in the approximately four-month recording project, with professional expertise added through mentoring by documentary photographer Sung Nam-hun and project managing by Jeong Myung-sik, a master carpenter of the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center, National Heritage Administration.
This exhibition is also scheduled to be showcased at the Jeonju International Photo Festival (scheduled for April 2026), Fujifilm Photo Festa (scheduled for August 2026), and a global network exhibition (scheduled for November 2026). The exhibited works will also be produced as a catalogue to preserve the valuable cultural heritage records of Korea.
