Lee Seung-chul Reflects on 40 Years of Music and the Unexpected Success of 'Neverending Story'
Singer Lee Seung-chul appeared on tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' to celebrate his 40th anniversary in the music industry and revealed the hidden backstory of his iconic song 'Neverending Story.'
He shared that the unexpected resurgence of the song was thanks to Yoo Jae-suk, expressing his long-held gratitude, which sparked interest.
Recalling the initial release of 'Neverending Story,' Lee Seung-chul explained that the song originated from a conversation with Kim Tae-won of the band Resurrection, where they decided to create a song to commemorate his 15th anniversary in the industry.
At that time, he had a new recording studio, allowing him to work on the song without pressure, and he was satisfied with the result. However, the reality was disappointing.
Despite promoting the song for about three months, it did not receive a significant response, and he considered wrapping up his activities.
The last program he appeared on before ending his promotional activities was 'A Night with a Reason,' hosted by Yoo Jae-suk and Song Eun-yi.
Lee Seung-chul recalled that the situation changed completely after the broadcast.
About a week later, he suddenly received a surge of interest, and performance inquiries increased dramatically.
During the broadcast, Lee Seung-chul expressed his heartfelt thanks, stating, "I always say this, but I have not forgotten my gratitude from that time." Yoo Jae-suk also reminisced, noting that 'A Night with a Reason' was not expected to last long, creating a meaningful atmosphere.
Both of them acknowledged that an unexpected broadcast changed the fate of a song.
Following the show, Lee Seung-chul revealed that concert promoters began reaching out to him.
As a result, he sold out a concert of about 8,000 seats at COEX's Atlantic Hall for three consecutive days, solidifying 'Neverending Story' as a signature hit.
This beloved classic, cherished by many even today, found its light due to a chance appearance on the show.
Now, 40 years into his career, Lee Seung-chul, known for numerous hits, prioritized expressing gratitude to those who provided him opportunities over reflecting on his glamorous success.
The enduring love for 'Neverending Story' seems to stem not only from its quality as a song but also from the unique story that has developed over the years.
