Finding Serenity in Nature: A Visit to Yeongju Sosuseowon

Lately, I've been wanting to escape from daily life and find deep tranquility in nature.
I visited Yeongju Sosuseowon, where the lush forest, steeped in history, meets the charm of traditional Korean architecture.
Sosuseowon is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized as the first educational institution in Korea officially designated by the king.
It was a center for Confucian scholarship during the Joseon Dynasty, nurturing countless talents.
Today, it welcomes visitors with the vibrant greenery of early summer.
Before exploring Sosuseowon, I decided to take a moment to enjoy the clear waters of Jukgyecheon stream.
The water was so pristine that the reflections of the sky and forest were beautifully captured on its surface.
As the name 'Chuihandae' suggests, a place to be intoxicated by the energy of the mountains and the refreshing waters, I felt my heart cleanse amidst the clear scenery.
Despite the early summer heat making me sweat, sitting at Chuihandae and feeling the cool mountain breeze was incredibly refreshing, allowing me to experience true serenity.
Currently, access to Sosuseowon is limited to protect our cultural heritage, allowing only certain areas to be viewed.
The Seongsaengdan, resembling a pavilion, is where offerings for rituals are inspected.
Interestingly, unlike most Confucian academies, Sosuseowon's Seongsaengdan is located at the entrance of the academy.
The main lecture hall, the largest space in Sosuseowon, features a plaque inscribed by King Myeongjong, the 13th king of Joseon.
During my visit, I saw individuals dressed in traditional attire, deeply engaged in their activities.
Imagining the scholars who practiced their studies here hundreds of years ago made the moment even more special, as I witnessed the coexistence of past and present.
At the back of the lecture hall, I discovered the Sosuseowon Archive, a neatly organized space containing various materials related to the academy's long history.
This area helped deepen my understanding of the academy's story, which could easily be overlooked.
Though not extravagant, the space resonated with a profound sense of history, enriching my travel experience.
The space where scholars once cultivated their knowledge amidst nature.
The beautiful scenery of the lecture hall nestled in a stunning pine forest and the refreshing views of Chuihandae exceeded my expectations for relaxation.
