Finding Peace in Art: A Visit to the Ulsan Cultural Center

When do you feel the most relaxed during the day?
Strangely enough, even without traveling far, I often experience a sense of calm as soon as I step into a quiet exhibition space.
This time was no different.
Recently, I visited the Ulsan Cultural Center and had the opportunity to see the ongoing '2026 Artist of the Year Solo Exhibition' in the permanent exhibition hall.
Initially, I didn't go there specifically for the exhibition. I had gone to see a performance and, with some time to spare, wandered into the exhibition area. The exhibition I stumbled upon stayed in my memory longer than I expected.
This year, the Ulsan Cultural Center is hosting the 'Artist of the Year Solo Exhibition,' a major project supporting the creative activities of local artists. Selected through an open call, regional artists showcase their artistic worlds to the public throughout the year.
In 2026, artists Park Jung-ho, Anna Yeon, Noh Soo-mi, Kang Hyun-sin, and Ban Ga-yeon will each hold solo exhibitions lasting about two months.
I visited during the exhibition period of Anna Yeon, who was showcasing her work from May to June.
As soon as I entered the exhibition hall, what caught my eye first was the color.
Light green.
Green.
Yellow.
Lastly, a soft sky blue.
These colors filled the space like a landscape viewed while walking through a sunlit forest.
Typically, in exhibitions, my attention is drawn to bold colors or overwhelming sizes, but this exhibition felt different. It was quiet. Yet, strangely, I found myself looking longer.
I would pause in front of one piece, move to another, and then return to view the first again.
As I looked at the artwork, I felt as though I had seen similar landscapes before.
It may not be a specific place but could remind me of a forest path from my childhood, a stroll on a day when the seasons changed, or the air from a moment of peace.
Later, I read that Anna Yeon creates her work based on various experiences and emotions felt in nature, inviting viewers into a cozy, dreamlike space in the woods.
At that moment, I understood why I felt so comfortable while viewing the exhibition.
The artworks didn't merely depict nature; they seemed to convey the emotions felt while observing it.
What I particularly appreciated was that the pieces did not impose any specific feelings on the viewer.
It felt like a gentle reminder that it’s okay to simply pause and take it all in.
During my time in the exhibition, I set my phone aside and spent time gazing at the artworks.
We often spend our days confirming and judging things multiple times, but in front of the paintings, there was no need for that.
It was a time to just look.
That felt more precious than I expected.
The accessibility of the Ulsan Cultural Center's permanent exhibition hall is also a significant advantage.
It’s a place where you can stop by after a performance, explore before or after cultural lectures, or naturally encounter art without needing to set aside extra time.
This is why I prefer this kind of exhibition.
Not the experience of saying, 'I should go see an exhibition,' but rather, 'I dropped by and found it unexpectedly enjoyable.'
This exhibition provided just that kind of experience.
After Anna Yeon's exhibition concludes, Noh Soo-mi's exhibition will follow in July and August.
Although it’s the same 'Artist of the Year Solo Exhibition,' each artist will present a completely different artistic world, making me look forward to the next exhibition.
In the second half of this year, exhibitions by Kang Hyun-sin and Ban Ga-yeon are also scheduled, so visiting each season could be an enjoyable experience.
I used to think exhibitions had to be grand, but this time felt different.
It was quiet, I walked slowly, and my heart was at ease.
Strangely, as I left the exhibition hall, I found myself taking a deep breath.
If you’re feeling a bit tired or need a moment to rest, why not stop by the Ulsan Cultural Center's permanent exhibition hall and experience the comfort offered by nature's colors?
A brief visit might linger in your memory longer than you think.
