Exploring Ulsan: The Historical Park of Doctor Park Sang-jin

Today, I would like to introduce a place in Ulsan that left a profound impression on me during my visit. It is the Park Sang-jin Historical Park, located at 10 Park Sang-jin 5-ro, Buk-gu, Ulsan.
When you think of Ulsan, many might first recall its industrial city image or natural attractions like the Taehwa River National Garden and Daewangam Park. However, Ulsan also harbors spaces rich in historical significance.
I visited the park in the morning, and as I strolled through its serene atmosphere, I found myself lingering much longer than I had anticipated.
Who is Doctor Park Sang-jin?
To fully appreciate this place, it is essential to understand who Doctor Park Sang-jin was. Born in 1884 in Songjeong-dong, Buk-gu, Ulsan, he was a leader of the righteous army during the late Joseon Dynasty and studied Confucianism under Heo Wi, a judge in Seoul.
Later, he majored in law and economics at Yangjeong School and passed the judge examination in 1910. However, he chose to resign and pursue the path of independence activism.
In 1912, he established the Sangdeok Association in Daegu as a communication hub for the independence movement and, in 1915, formed the Joseon Restoration Society and the Korean Independence Association, where he served as the commander. The Korean Independence Association grew to be the largest independence organization in Korea during the 1910s.
A landowner, Doctor Park invested all his wealth into the independence movement. He was arrested while returning home to visit his ailing mother in 1918 and died in Daegu Prison in 1921 at the young age of 38. In 1963, the government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation.
Knowing about his life before stepping into the park adds depth to the experience beyond a mere stroll.
Experiencing the Elegance of a Late Joseon Noble House
The centerpiece of the park is Doctor Park Sang-jin's birthplace. This traditional Korean house consists of six buildings, including the main house and guest quarters, arranged in a typical 'ㅂ' shape of late Joseon noble residences.
Built in 1825, the house has aged over the years but was restored by Ulsan City after purchasing it in 2002, completing renovations in 2007.
The restored house exudes a neat and graceful beauty. Standing in the yard and gazing at the eaves of the tiled roof, the weight of the fact that a young man born and raised here devoted everything for his country resonated deeply.
This beautiful house also serves as a perfect backdrop for photos, making it both a historical site and a photography hotspot.
Visit the Exhibition Hall for a Deeper Dive into History
Next to the birthplace, the Park Sang-jin Exhibition Hall is a must-visit. It displays actual historical materials, including timelines, court documents, postcards, and petitions, along with models that engage children in history.
Among the exhibits, you can find the poignant farewell poem he wrote for General Kim Jwa-jin, a comrade and vice-commander of the Korean Independence Association. This particular display is moving even for adults.
This is one of the reasons why Ulsan is a great place to visit with children. Experiencing the history of the independence movement through real artifacts and spaces adds immense value to this location.
Explore the Historical Buildings in the Park
As part of the Park Sang-jin Historical Park, several historical buildings, including Bongsan Jeongsa and Songae Jeongsa, which belonged to the Miryang Park clan, have been relocated and restored.
Among them, Yangjeongja served as a study space for Park Sang-jin's uncle and a residence in his later years, built in the 1920s. The building, constructed with a rare formal style in the Yeongnam region, holds significant architectural value.
In front of the pavilion, a lotus pond embodies the spirit of Cheonwonji, showcasing the refined noble culture of the time.
The entire park is well-maintained, making it a delightful place to stroll and explore. Visiting during spring when nature begins to bloom enhances the beauty of the serene traditional house.
It is also a pleasant surprise that all facilities are free to use.
