This weekend, I took my kids for a long-awaited visit to the Ulsan Museum.
Not only are the exhibitions impressive, but the newly equipped facilities are also fantastic. However, being close by seems to make it easy to overlook.
Whether you're a local or visiting Ulsan, families can enjoy hands-on experiences at the children's museum and delve deeper into the stories of Ulsan.
Today, I want to introduce the exhibition titled 'Ulsan Grandmother's Treasure Box,' which runs from December 23, 2025, to June 28, 2026.
This exhibition allows visitors to experience traditional games and folk culture, as if Ulsan's grandmothers are sharing stories with us.
Shall we step into the exhibition hall and see what it holds?
As we enter, it feels like a warm grandmother is welcoming us, setting a pleasant tone for our visit.
Having lived in Ulsan for four years, I've discovered many traditional games and folk tales that have been passed down through generations.
Visiting local landmarks often reveals fascinating stories, making it enjoyable to read about them.
It's wonderful to find these stories gathered in one place, along with interactive experiences for kids.
The charm of this exhibition lies in how it sparks children's curiosity about traditional games like 'Soeuburi,' 'Maduhee,' and 'Maegwiak.'
Kids eagerly run towards the exhibits, asking, 'Mom, what game is this?' This naturally leads to discussions about Ulsan.
In the center, there's a space where visitors can sit on a traditional platform and play games.
Children can freely engage in familiar games like 'Gongi,' 'Jegi-chagi,' 'Yutnori,' and 'Gonu.'
The interactive setup encourages active participation, as they can choose games from a basket.
My children first picked up 'Gongi,' but each child has different preferences.
While I was unfamiliar with 'Gonu,' the clear instructions made it easy to join in the fun.
It turned out to be a delightful experience.
Even as an adult, I had the chance to engage in traditional games I wasn't familiar with.
There are also areas to sit and create crafts, write wishes, and share stories about Ulsan.
As the title suggests, it truly feels like Ulsan Grandmother's 'treasure box' has been opened.
The exhibition is filled with activities for children and provides parents with easy insights into Ulsan.
By learning more about Ulsan, I can share these stories with my kids.
Visiting the Ulsan Children's Museum and the permanent exhibition, including 'Ulsan Grandmother's Treasure Box,' can make for a wonderful half-day outing.
