Exploring the Whale Watching Experience in Ulsan

May, the month of family, is a perfect time to express gratitude and enjoy outings or trips before the summer heat sets in.
As we welcome May, many families will likely embark on outings.
The Jangsaengpo Whale Watching Boat began its first voyage at the end of March this year.
Ulsan's Jangsaengpo is increasingly becoming a place filled with attractions and activities.
The whale watching boat, which operates from spring onwards, is one of the unique experiences that Jangsaengpo offers.
For those planning to board the whale watching boat, it is advisable to make reservations online. While on-site ticketing is available, it may not guarantee a spot due to capacity issues, so online booking is more convenient.
There is a ticket booth in front of the boarding area. Even if you have made a reservation, you must stop by here to confirm your ticket before boarding.
The whale watching boat offers various courses to suit different preferences. You can choose to go on weekdays, weekends, or enjoy a romantic night cruise.
Note that the duration of the trips varies by course. The whale watching tour lasts three hours, while the coastal tour and night coastal tour take one and a half hours.
The ticket prices for the whale watching tour are 20,000 won for adults and 10,000 won for children. The coastal course is 15,000 won for adults and 7,000 won for children. Discounted tickets are available for certain groups, and you should bring necessary documentation.
Importantly, don't forget to bring your ID. Boarding is not allowed without it, so make sure to have it when you head to the whale watching boat.
Inside the ticket booth, you can purchase tickets on-site and receive your boarding pass after confirmation of your reservation.
Don't forget to fill out the boarding declaration form. If you take the whale watching course, you may encounter numerous whales, but this is a rare sight, so good luck!
After completing the ticketing process, you can move to the waiting area for boarding. If you parked at the whale museum parking lot, you can get free parking by confirming at the ticket booth.
After showing your boarding pass and ID, you will enter in order. There are no assigned seats, so you can freely choose your spot once on board.
The whale watching boat features various facilities. The second floor has a simple café where you can enjoy coffee and drinks, while the third floor has a shop for light meals and snacks.
As a souvenir of your trip, you will receive a character grip from Ulsan's Nam-gu, which is a nice touch. If you board with children, they provide a kit to make paper boats during the trip.
As the boat departs, you gradually move away from the boarding area. Enjoy the unique view of Ulsan Bridge from the sea, and it's recommended to go outside after departure.
Can you see the Ulsan Bridge observation deck in the distance? We are slowly drifting away from the city of Ulsan, and the view of Jangsaengpo from the sea is quite different.
The first and second floors are indoor spaces, while the third floor is open-air. You can buy shrimp chips at the shop on the third floor and have fun throwing them to the seagulls.
Watching the seagulls eagerly chasing after the shrimp chips is one of the highlights of the trip. It's entertaining to see them fight and miss the treats.
Although we didn't encounter any dolphins that day, enjoying the sight of seagulls was still delightful.
If you usually worry about seasickness, staying on the open-air third floor is recommended. However, since it's outdoors, it can get windy and cold, so bringing a coat or warm gear is a good idea.
Indoors, you can sit comfortably and chat or admire the scenery outside. Depending on the time, there may also be performances on stage, so you can choose to stay inside or outside based on your preference.
For those concerned about motion sickness, the café on the second floor sells ginger tea, which is good for nausea.
Even though we didn't see any whales, the experience of encountering Ulsan's unique scenery made for a worthwhile outing. As you approach Ulsan Port, make sure to go outside and enjoy the view.
If you return without seeing any whales, you will receive a certificate upon disembarking. This certificate allows free entry to one of the whale museum, whale culture village, or Ulsan ship, so it’s worth exploring while you’re in Jangsaengpo.
Additionally, the whale ecology experience center offers a 40% discount with this certificate, so decide where to use it and plan your visit accordingly. Please note that the certificate is valid for 30 days from the date of issue!
Enjoy your whale watching adventure!
