Exploring the Ulsan Whale Museum: A Family-Friendly Destination

Hello! I'm Heo Eun-sun, a blogger from Ulsan.
Once upon a time, the drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo gained immense popularity.
The protagonist, Attorney Woo Young-woo, is exceptionally knowledgeable about whales, which sparked a lot of interest in these magnificent creatures.
When you think of whales, you can't overlook Ulsan!
Ulsan has a remarkable history with whales dating back to prehistoric times, and the Ulsan Jangsaengpo Whale Museum is the perfect place to learn everything about them.
With the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, I believe this would be a fantastic travel destination for families and children.
Jangsaengpo in Nam-gu, Ulsan, was once a hub for whaling activities and is rich in whale history and culture.
That's why Ulsan designated Jangsaengpo as a Whale Culture Special Zone.
As you explore Jangsaengpo, you can naturally delve into the unique lifestyle and culture associated with whales.
Let's take a closer look at the stories filled within the Jangsaengpo Whale Museum.
Special Exhibition Hall
A special exhibition titled Family of Dolphins Under One Roof will be held from February 10 to August 30, 2026, showcasing various interesting tales about dolphins.
On the first floor of the museum, alongside the special exhibition, you can explore the history of whales in Jangsaengpo.
In the 70s and 80s, the whaling industry thrived, and the local economy was so robust that even dogs were seen carrying money.
Don't miss the Ban-Goo-Dae Petroglyph Special Exhibition Hall on the first floor, featuring information about the UNESCO-listed petroglyphs of Banguchun.
Ulsan has had a close relationship with whales since prehistoric times, making it truly a whale city.
Visitors can also view explanations of various patterns engraved on the petroglyph walls, enhancing their understanding of this historical site.
There is also a children's experience room within the museum. If you're visiting with kids, be sure to check the operating hours on the museum's website.
The tour starts on the third floor.
In the Whale Cultural Village, you can see a replica of a whaling station, reminiscent of the past when locals would gather to witness the whale dissection.
You can encounter various types of whales here, from enormous ones to smaller dolphins.
The exhibition hall displays giant whale models and bones, allowing you to gauge their sizes.
Tools used in whaling and various whale bones are also exhibited, illustrating their massive scale.
Visitors can even see and touch the bones of a humpback whale up close.
The museum introduces products made from whales, highlighting their extensive use beyond just food.
As you explore, you'll gain a wealth of new information, almost becoming a whale expert yourself.
It's also impressive that the whaling ship Jin Yang No. 5 is displayed inside the museum.
There are colorful photo zones featuring beautiful underwater scenes.
The special exhibition on the first floor continues in another space, where you can meet the dolphin friends living in the Jangsaengpo Whale Ecology Experience Center.
There are also interactive spaces for children to learn about whale features and color their favorite whales, which will then swim across the screen.
The slide connecting the third and first floors is sure to be a highlight for kids.
The Whale Museum is not just about rigid exhibitions; it's a comfortable place where children can learn and have fun. If you haven't visited yet, be sure to stop by.
With the Lunar New Year in February, various day events will also be held, so keep that in mind.
After exploring the museum, there's a goods shop and café where you can find upcycled whale plushies, perfect as souvenirs from your Jangsaengpo trip.
