Utilizing weekends for local exploration, the Gyeonggi Province travel project 'Weekend in Gyeonggi' kicked off from August to October with five distinct themes. This initiative goes beyond mere sightseeing, transforming local resources such as neighborhood hills, farms, and pottery into customized experiences. I recently attended the second journey, Sweet Week: Table of Harvest, centered around the specialty of Hwaseong City, the Song San grape.
One of the highlights of this program was the exclusive shuttle bus departing from Sadang Station and a local restaurant lunch. Without the hassle of driving, participants could enjoy a day trip while savoring Hwaseong's famous clam kalguksu for lunch, enriching the local travel experience.
Upon arriving at Song San Grape Farm Story, we were welcomed with refreshing non-alcoholic grape mojitos made directly from the farm. The modern facilities of the smart farm, complemented by stylish purple banners, created an exciting atmosphere, as if entering a new travel destination.
The farm showcased a vast collection of grape varieties, displaying 51 types out of over 300 cultivated varieties. Participants could encounter a vibrant array of unique grapes, serving as a popular photo zone for attendees.
The official program began with a talk by Lee Wan-yong, a grape master and recipient of a presidential commendation. He shared insights on grape cultivation, including the influence of the western coastal breeze and Hwaseong's geographical features on grape sweetness, along with 32 years of farming expertise. This was a moment to deeply appreciate the value of local agriculture and the dedication of farmers.
One of the key activities was a tasting of ten different grape varieties, providing a unique experience. Participants savored the grapes like wine, evaluating them based on visual appeal, aroma, texture, and sweetness, while documenting their favorites. This sensory experience allowed for a multifaceted exploration of grapes.
After the tasting, we toured the large-scale grape house equipped with a smart control system. Walking among the lush grapevines, we had the opportunity to pick and taste ripe grapes directly from the farm, relishing the freshness of seasonal fruits.
The highlight of the event was the upscale dessert buffet, Table of Harvest, featuring grape-themed delicacies. The pairing of grape Danish, burrata cheese salad, grape wine, and grape-flavored coffee showcased the transformation of local produce into exquisite desserts, revealing the potential for local ingredients to create elegant culinary experiences.
To conclude the meal, a 'Harvest Ceremony' allowed participants to reflect on their personal achievements over the year. They wrote their accomplishments on card flags and placed them on a rice cake, celebrating each other's growth. This meaningful conclusion transcended mere enjoyment, fostering connections among participants.
As I wrapped up the day with a grape tasting set, the memories of the Hwaseong grape farm lingered on the journey home. The 'Weekend in Gyeonggi Sweet Week' clearly demonstrated the synergy created when excellent local resources meet thoughtful travel planning. From comfortable shuttle services to visits to local eateries and farm parties, the experience offered unforgettable weekends for residents.
The 'Weekend in Gyeonggi' project continues through October with various themes across Gyeonggi Province, including Icheon and Yeoju. I recommend exploring the diverse local charms of Gyeonggi this weekend.
