If you're traveling to Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, a must-visit destination is the Gunsan Modern History Museum. Gunsan is one of the cities where modern cultural heritage is best preserved since the opening of its ports, and at its heart lies the Gunsan Modern History Museum.

The museum offers a spacious free parking lot, making it easy to visit. There are also combined tickets available to explore nearby modern cultural heritage sites, making it a great choice for a half-day weekend trip.

The exterior of the museum features a harmonious blend of red bricks and green, allowing visitors to feel the modern atmosphere of Gunsan. Once you enter, the warm interior offers plenty of activities, making it a perfect destination to visit with children, even in the cold winter months.

Upon entering, you can immediately explore the Marine Logistics History Hall. Here, you can see artifacts such as pottery, ceramics, and tools excavated from the Gunsan area, and even board a reconstructed transport ship.

A large map of the West Coast and a topographical map of Gunsan fill one wall, providing a visual explanation of why the city developed and prospered. This space is also great for teaching children about the role of a port city.

On the opposite side of the first-floor exhibition area, there is a children's experience hall, making it an enjoyable visit for families. This area features cute illustrations of Gunsan's attractions, along with activities like building blocks, large screen games in a ball pit, and a small rock-climbing slide that children love. It's a place where kids can freely play indoors during the chilly winter, ensuring high satisfaction for parents as well.

As you ascend to the third floor, you'll find a Modern Living Hall that appears to transport you back to the 1930s in Gunsan. This exhibit, resembling a street from that era, is popular for evoking nostalgia in adults and curiosity in children. Right upon entering, a rickshaw catches your eye, allowing visitors to hop on and take photos in old-fashioned attire.

The shoe store section displays various sizes of traditional wooden shoes and rubber shoes, which visitors can try on. Explaining to children that people used to wear these shoes provides a natural way to teach them about daily life in the past.

Inside the Modern Living Hall, a recreated classroom from the 1930s showcases wooden desks and a blackboard, giving insight into what schools looked like back then. Here, visitors can also enjoy a rubbing experience, making it a fun way to spend time with children.

Additionally, the museum offers various hands-on activities, from experiencing traditional Korean grain measurement to engaging with exhibits that highlight the agricultural structure of Gunsan and its anti-Japanese movements. The rubbing experience of the Declaration of Independence is something both kids and adults should try for a deeper understanding of history.

At the end of the exhibition, there's a spot to take photos with vintage backgrounds, making you feel as if you've traveled back to the 1930s. While you can't print the photos on-site, you can receive them via email.

Returning to the second floor, I visited the special exhibition commemorating the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Gunsan Volunteer Fire Brigade, titled 'Immortal Volunteers, Eternal Flame.' This exhibition showcases the clothing, equipment, and historical photographs of volunteer firefighters, allowing visitors to feel the history of safety and dedication upheld by the citizens of Gunsan. This exhibition will run until March 29, 2026, so be sure to check it out!

The Gunsan Modern History Museum offers a spacious experience area for children and engaging exhibitions for adults, making it a highly satisfying family travel destination.

It is a place where you can simultaneously experience modern architecture, the history of daily life, and the essence of the port city of Gunsan. If you're planning a trip to Gunsan, I highly recommend adding this museum to your itinerary.
