Exploring the Masung Comic Library in Ulsan

Ulsan is home to two comic libraries for comic book enthusiasts. The first one I visited was the Masung Comic Library located in Dong-gu, following my trip to the Jung-gu Sanjeon Comic Library.
The Masung Comic Library boasts a diverse collection of comic books available for borrowing. I visited this library to read some titles I had been eager to explore.
After passing by Hyundai Motor Company and Yeomposan, I arrived at the Nammok 1-dong Administrative Welfare Center.
The Masung Comic Library is situated on the second floor of the Nammok 1-dong Administrative Welfare Center and reopened in 2022 as a specialized comic library, transforming from the original Nammok Small Library.
Upon entering the Masung Comic Library, I was greeted by shelves filled with comic books, making it a delightful space for comic book lovers. Although it is smaller compared to regular libraries, the space is well-utilized, showcasing a variety of genres.
The library features comics, children's books, young adult literature, and general books, with comic books occupying most of the space, as expected from a specialized library.
Among the popular titles are webtoons that have gained global recognition, such as 'Tiger Brother,' the film adaptation 'Moon Yoo,' and the drama 'What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?' along with 'Jeongnyeon.'
Compared to the Sanjeon Comic Library in Jung-gu, Masung offers a broader selection of genres, including romance, science fiction, and classic comics, making it a popular destination for those from Uljin-gun and other districts seeking specific comic titles.
As the only library in Ulsan that allows comic book borrowing, Masung sees a significant number of comic rentals.
The library houses many beloved Japanese comics, such as 'Dragon Ball' and 'One Piece' for younger readers, as well as 'Slam Dunk' and 'Attack on Titan' for teenagers and adults.
Each comic book has been carefully coated for protection, ensuring that many citizens of Ulsan can enjoy them. The librarian encourages borrowers to keep the books clean for the benefit of future readers.
For students aspiring to be comic artists, there is a drawing corner where they can create four-panel comics. Participants receive photo cards of comic characters as a gift.
You can also view the four-panel comic creations drawn by students who aspire to be future webtoon artists.
For educational purposes, the library offers a range of popular educational comics, including the 'Common Sibling' series, history comics, learning comics, and science comics.
Traces of the old Nammok Small Library are still present, with large print books available for seniors and this year's Ulsan books among the general collection.
At the innermost part of the library, there is a general reading room featuring literature, economics, social sciences, science, humanities, and self-development books.
This library allows readers to transition smoothly from comic books to general literature, creating a natural bridge.
The Masung Comic Library also offers free bookmarks for readers, making it a bookmark haven.
Children who enjoy reading comic books are more likely to read general books as well. Consider visiting with a child who loves comics to enjoy the free comic reading experience.
