Exploring the Maengsan Environmental Ecology Learning Center in May
May is Family Month, a time to explore with loved ones.
As the refreshing greens fill the air, many parents ponder,
"Where should we take the kids this weekend?"
While long trips are great, how about a nearby treasure where
children can learn the value of nature and play freely?
Welcome to the Maengsan Environmental Ecology Learning Center,
a hidden gem in Bundang, Seongnam City.
Here, the laughter of children fills the air,
and adults can enjoy a refreshing break from daily life.
The Maengsan Environmental Ecology Learning Center is special because of its fireflies.
To protect Maengsan from development threats,
citizens formed the Bundang Environmental Citizens' Group in 1994,
working to preserve a clean environment where fireflies can thrive.
This effort led to the establishment of the current ecology learning center.
The first floor features an experiential exhibition room
that visitors can freely explore.
This space is not just for viewing; it engages the senses,
allowing visitors to touch, hear, and interact with nature.
Inside, stories of various creatures living in Maengsan abound.
Large murals and intricate wooden models showcase Maengsan's
landscape and wetland ecosystem, serving as excellent pre-exploration.
The center offers specialized programs for different age groups.
Every month, on the 1st at 10 AM,
reservations for next month's programs are available online.
For those interested, here are some of the programs:

During my visit, I observed kindergarten children participating in the Eco Kids program.
These children, dressed in yellow uniforms, were captivated by their teacher's words,
expressing awe at the wonders of nature.
In one session, children observed tadpoles and frog eggs in a wetland
that was well-maintained for amphibians to thrive.
The outdoor experience area allowed them to watch tadpoles closely,
with curious eyes asking, "Will this really turn into a frog?"
For families worried about fully booked programs,
the center offers a self-guided ecological exploration that requires no reservation.
Using QR codes, families can embark on outdoor learning missions together.
Exploring the forest while discussing among themselves adds a unique charm.
The self-guided exploration consists of five missions,
including spotting small birdhouses in the trees.
These birdhouses provide cozy homes for birds and are great observation targets for kids.
The joy of discovery as children shout, "Look, there's another birdhouse!"
makes for a delightful adventure.
The outdoor ecological playground features wooden play structures
that encourage healthy play without harming nature.
