Exploring the Legacy of Lee Ye, the First Diplomat of Joseon

Recently, while traveling from Ulsan to Yangsan and Gyeongju, I often pass by a road called Iye-ro. This made me curious about the origin of its name: "Who is Iye of Iye-ro?"
Upon researching, I discovered that Iye-ro is named after Lee Ye, a notable figure from Ulsan, recognized as the first diplomatic envoy of the Joseon Dynasty.
As a citizen of Ulsan, I wanted to explore the significance behind the road's name. Thus, I decided to visit the Lee Ye Promotion Hall.
The promotion hall offers insights into Lee Ye's life and diplomatic achievements. It is located next to Yongyeon Seowon and Ihujeong, providing a meaningful experience.
Address: 20 Ihujeong-gil, Nam-gu, Ulsan
Operating Hours: 9 AM - 4 PM
The Lee Ye Promotion Hall was established to honor Lee Ye, the first diplomatic envoy of Joseon. It is situated right next to Ihujeong, which is designated as Ulsan's cultural heritage No. 1.
At the entrance, there are informational materials about Lee Ye and Ihujeong, which help visitors understand the historical context and significance of the site.
Lee Ye played a crucial role in stabilizing diplomatic relations with Japan during the early Joseon period, making numerous trips to Japan as a diplomatic envoy. He is also recognized for his efforts in facilitating the return of Joseon citizens who had been captured by pirates.
The hall showcases various materials related to Lee Ye's life and achievements. It serves as a meaningful space to understand the historical context of his time.
Ihujeong, located next to Yongyeon Seowon, is another space worth exploring. Originally part of the Hakseong-gwan guesthouse, it has been designated as Ulsan's cultural heritage No. 1. The building was saved from demolition during the Japanese occupation and relocated for preservation.
Visiting the Lee Ye Promotion Hall and Ihujeong offers a great opportunity to learn about Ulsan's history and culture. Especially for families, it can serve as an educational experience about local historical figures and diplomatic stories.
As I visited, the staff kindly provided explanations and even gave me a related book to read with my child. We have been enjoying learning more about Lee Ye together at home.
I highly recommend visiting the Lee Ye Promotion Hall, not just for Ulsan citizens but for anyone interested in the region's history and figures. I hope many people take the opportunity to learn about the achievements and significance of Lee Ye.
